Golders Green put up a magnificent fight at Slough last Saturday, against a full strength home side, runners up and one of the most formidable combinations in the Herts & Middlesex League.
The Green were below full strength, as Massey, their outside right, had to cry off at the last minute owing to military duties : Doyle was brought in to deputise. The Green had on view a new goalkeeper, A. Simmonds, who acquitted himself creditably, but was not often seriously tested.
one could not honestly say that Slough showed that superiority which would have entitled them to a victory : if anything, Golders Green were the better side : they had several good scoring chances, while Slough's winning goal was a fortunate scrambled affair. A draw would have been a fairer reflection of the play.
Early on, West had to be nippy to save a header from Worthington. Soon afterwards, Golders Green were awarded a penalty for hands, but Barker's shot, though hard and true, was easily dealt with by West, it being sufficiently near him to enable hom to punch out : Worthington headed over following the rebound. Taylor tested Simmonds, and Barker gave West an awkward shot to hold, but the interval came without score.
The winning goal was notched after 18 minutes of the second half. Taylor pushed the ball forward : Simmonds half gathered, but Fussell and INGRAM both rushed in on him, and the latter flicked the ball which trickled over the line into the net.
Goodchild, now at outside right, was put through by a cross pass in the closing stages, but his shot went outside the post.
