Golders Green fielded what seemed a strong side for their Herts & Middlesex League match v. Clapton at Forest Gate last Saturday; Stroud came in at outside right, and Welland at left half, Bucci moving to outside left; Goodchild sportingly stood down to enable a Service man to be played.
the team never settled down to play the football of which it has shown itself capable. Clapton's hard kicking, quick tackling and the speed of their forward line seemed to upset them from the start. The visiting forwards seemed unable to sustain attack, thus the defence was under continued pressure. it responded splendidly, but could not hold out indefinitely against these odds.
the ball did not run kindly for the Green. It was a clean, sporting game, yet they conceded three penalties -- for hands. these were taken by Beaney, Clapton's left back. The first he put wide, but with the second [BEANEY] gave Clapton the lead which they held at the interval.
Early in the second half Stroud gave Bucci a pass, but his shot went over the bar. Beaney was fortunate to kick clear off the goal line with Robson beaten, but after 35 minutes WORTHINGTON shot home to equalise.
Ac draw seemed likely, but Clapton's pressure continued, and five minutes from time FARRELL scored to give the home side the lead.
Just before the close, a Clapton attack had the Green's defence in a tangle. Gallacher ran across to tackle Brooks, but the winger got his kick in : Simmonds tried to gather, but the ball went to Latarche : Topp ran on to the goal line and made a great effort to stop the shot. In doing so, he was adjudged to have handled, and BERANEY again converted the penalty, making the final score Clapton 3, Golders Green 1.
