On Saturday, Golders Green made history by defeating the powerful Hitchin Town eleven by 3-1, and thus progressing to the 2nd round of the new Herts & Middlesex League Cup.
The Green have invariably done badly against the Hertfordshire side in the past and, except for this season's 1-1 draw in the League, have usually lost, even in their palmy pre-war days when, on rare occasions, the clubs were drawn against each other in such competitions as the A. F. A. Senior Cup.
Saturday's win was therefore all the more gratifying, especially as there was no suggestion of fluke about it. On the day's play the Green were undoubtedly the better side, and but for continued forward weakness would have won by a larger margin.
The home side showed several changes from that which met Finchley the previous week. H. Perrith was in goal; Fisher returned to right back with Weeks as his partner; Lovell came in at centre half, and Bucci moved to left half vice Munday, injured; Alexander resumed at inside left with Stockwell as his wing partner.
Though Hitchin had the advantage of the wind in the first half, Golders Green scored first. After 10 minutes' play Pulling gained possession and passed to FONTANA who, as the goalkeeper advanced, coolly lobbed the ball over Jones' head into the net. The advantage was short-lived. Hitchin attacked; McCarthy shot and Perrith punched the rising ball; it went to GOODALL, who easily equalised.
Both sides attacked in turn, Perrith making some good saves for the Green, and Chapman heading out a certain goal when Pulling shot with Jones out of his charge. Half-time came with the score 1-1.
In the second half the Green, with the wind, gained the upper hand. Early on, Pulling and Jones collided heavily, and both had to leave the field for attention, Chamberlain holding the fort well in Hitchin's goal. The two players, however, soon returned.
The Green pressed hard. Jones saved from Breagan before the ball went to STROUD. Nodding it down, he gained control in great style, sped through and put in a crashing shot which flew in front of Jones into the left-hand corner of the net -- a brilliant goal.
Hitchin made a desperately ferocious effort to draw level, but were repulsed. With 10 minutes to go Lovell gave a good forward pass to ALEXANDER, who put the issue beyond doubt. He shot low and the ball completely beat Jones, entering the net to make the score 3-1.
