Match Report

Golders Green, for the second week in succession, were called upon, on Saturday, to visit Finchley, this time in the Semi-Final of the Middlesex Senior Cup.

The visitors put up a good fight -- a far better performance than on the previous Saturday -- and may be considered somewhat unfortunate to have lost by the odd goal of three. On the run of the play a draw would perhaps have been a fairer result, but the Green's forwards frittered away many chances, and there was a bad lack of punch in the front line.

Finchley fielded an unchanged side, but Golders Green were without Lovell and Shorland, while Alexander was replaced by F. Long, home on leave. Rodwell came in at left back, and Goodchild at outside left.

Fisher, moving to centre-half, played a magnificent game, completely subduing Young, who had been the danger spot the previous week; Rodwell played his best game for the club, but Bucci was not happy at right back.

Leniston, in goal, was in excellent form, but the forward line showed marked weakness. The ball was held too close, and the shooting, if and when it came, was feeble.

As in the previous game, Finchley made an early attack and scored, YOUNG netting in three minutes. Golders Green hit back strongly, and after about half an hour, Roberts, in saving from Pulling, only half gathered the ball. GOODCHILD dashed in to equalise. Down the slope and with the wind, Finchley pressed strongly for the remainder of the first half, but were unable to take the lead.

After the interval, the visitors attacked heavily, but were repulsed, and Finchley dashed up the field. Bucci could not clear, and HUGHES, with Leniston unsighted, shot through a ruck of players. Leniston saw the ball too late; he touched it could not prevent the ball entering the net.

From the restart the Green swept down the field and Long put in a glorious drive -- the best shot of the match, which crashed against the crossbar, with Roberts beaten, and rebounded into play. It was an effort which deserved better luck.

For the greater part of the second half Golders Green attacked, but poor finishing and a good defence prevented them from scoring.
