Golders Green put up a fine fight at Claremont Road last Saturday, when they met R.A.F. (W) in the second round of the Middlesex Red Cross Cup.
The rules governing this competition permit clubs to field professional players, and, taking advantage of this privilege, the visitors sent a team consisting of no fewer than seven professionals, and also included the Amateur International, Lester Finch, at outside left. The R.A.F. won by 3-1.
Golders Green were without Lovell and Weeks, while Bucci was away ill. Fisher played at right back with Rodwell as his partner. Munday put up a fine game at centre half, and Alexander had a successful match at left half, Cochrane coming in at inside left.
The Green tried to play good football, but the hard tackling and the long kicking tactics of the visitors put this at a discount. The first half was evenly contested, the Green having more scoring chances, but bad finishing again wasted many opportunities. Fisher held Finch in a vice-like grip and the winger was never dangerous.
Fontana twice put wide, and then Clack just beat Pulling for the ball, shortly afterwards diverting with difficulty a shot from Cochrane. After 20 minutes' play Critchley got away from Rodwell and MULLIGAN shot low into the net from his pass to give the visitors the lead. A delightful movement by the Green's forwards led to the equaliser within a minute. Goodchild put to Cochrane, who gave to Pulling, and from his pass STROUD dashed up to score.
The interval came with the score 1-1, but almost immediately after the resumption the visitors went ahead. FORDER, who had come up to centre forward, took a pass and scored with a soft shot along the ground. Two corners to the Green followed, and then Pulling had an excellent chance of equalising, but shot yards over the bar.
A free kick to the R.A.F. led to danger, but Rodwell headed out of goal after Perrith had missed the ball. An excellent Green attack looked likely to yield a goal. Cochrane and Goodchild combined well, but Goodchild, whose play showed great promise, put in a good shot just over the bar.
Then, following a throw-in, MULLIGAN scored the R.A.F. third to settle the issue, the visitors thus running out winners by 3 goals to 1.
