With the last kick of the match -- there was not even time to centre the ball before the final whistle -- Golders Green scored the goal which took them to fifth place in the final Herts and Middlesex League table on Easter Monday at Claremont Road [venue switched as Wood Green Town's ground was unavailable.] This is their best League record since the outbreak of war.
For the greater part of the game, Golders Green -- playing in now unfamiliar blue and white hoops to avoid clashing with Wood Green's colours -- appeared lethargic and slow, but in the last quarter of an hour or so they suddenly livened up and played some really good football.
Golders green were still without Sealey, while Bucci was also unfit. R. Johnson deputised at centre half, while Webb came in at inside right. So that Ryder could play in his correct position, Rogers switched to left half.
The Green took the lead within three minutes of the start. CHAPPELL went over to the left wing to gain possession, cut in and sot home a low drive which Simmonds touched but could not save. Half an hour had passed before Wood Green got on terms, MAYNING [not Maynard] shooting home from close in. Just before the interval Golders Green again went ahead, WEBB converting a pass by Stroud. The half-time score was thus 2-1.
Five minutes after resuming, WADE equalised for Wood Green, and after 18 minutes NETTING, who had gone to centre forward, ran through and gave his side the lead, which they held for about a quarter of an hour. Then, as the result of a good movement between Mitchell and Webb, Chappell gave STROUD a pass from which he equalised. But straight from the kick-off NETTING went through again and restored Wood Green's lead with a great shot.
Thirty-three minutes had now gone, and Golders Green suddenly began to play strong football. During pressure in front of Wood Green's goal, Simmonds was penalised for carrying, and an indirect free kick resulted. It was cleverly taken, Stroud tapping the ball to MITCHELL, who scored with a nice shot.
The tally now stood at 4-all, with five minutes to go. Golders Green pressed hard, and just on the stroke of time Webb passed to STROUD, who took the ball through and scored from an acute angle. As Simmonds picked the ball out of the net the final whistle blew.
