Golders Green met Handley Page in a friendly match at Claremont Road last Saturday and had little difficulty in securing a 3-1 verdict.
Phillips, at right back for the Green, created a good impression, while Fisher at centre half showed skill, resourcefulness and fine power of recovery in dealing with a strong centre forward; both inside men were clever but tended to hold the ball too long, while the wingers too often delayed their centres.
Ten minutes after the kick-off, Golders Green were awarded a free-kick near midfield. ALEXANDER took it, and the ball, deceiving Cole in its flight, dropped into the net. Ten minutes later, Mitchell passed to CHAPPELL, who shot hard; the ball touched Johnson in its flight, but he could not deflect it clear and the Green were two up. Within a minute STROUD scored the third from Chappell's pass. The Green could not break through the visitors' defence again.
After te interval, F.R. Johnson, who was hurt in the first half, moved to outside left; Cole saved from Chappell following a corner, and made excellent clearances from Goodchild and Mitchell. Then Handley Page went down the field and in gathering the ball under pressure, Sale was injured and left the field. The Green played 10 men for the rest of the game, with Alexander in goal, Munday at left back and Stroud at left half.
Ten minutes before the end, Handley Page broke away on the left and HENOCQ scored. Just before the close Goodchild, receiving from Mitchell, hit the crossbar with a fine effort.
