In each of their three previous games this season, Golders Green had been handicapped by injuries received in the course of the match. Already weakened through these injuries, which caused the enforced absence of Chappell, Bucci and Sealey, the Green suffered a further blow when they visited Hitchin last Saturday. After only eight minutes' play, Rogers was injured, left the field and took no further part in the match. At this time, the Green, if anything, had been having somewhat the better of the exchanges, but, with a depleted forward line, it was only natural that the side did itself less than justice, and the result is not one to be viewed seriously in the circumstances.
The centre forward berth was entrusted to E. Massey [not Munday as in the printed report] , who performed creditably in the difficult conditions : Sale missed the train, but G. Hart fortunately was present to step into the breach, and played a magnificent game. He dealt confidently and cleanly with shots from all angles, saved a penalty, and could not possibly be blamed for any of the goals scored. R. Gallacher deputised ably for the injured Sealey at centre half, while V. Saunders came in at inside right, but losing his wing partner so early in the game, had very little chance.
For the opening exchanges, Golders Green showed encouraging dash and combination, but after Rogers' injury, Hitchin soon got the upper hand. The first goal was scored after 17 minutes when COOMBS converted a pass by Gadd. Five minutes before the interval, BUTCHER increased Hitchin's lead, and a minute before half time GADD scored the third.
On resuming, Goodchild got through well, and R. Jones saved with some difficulty. The winger and his partner Mitchell did some excellent work, and never gave up trying. A number of curious "off-side" decisions by the linesman rather upset the Green's attack, and after a time the home crowd objected to these decisions in no uncertain manner. After a few minutes Hitchin were awarded a penalty for hands, but Hart made a magnificent clearance.
After about 20 minutes' play, following a fine save by Hart, the ball was sent back from the right wing for T. CLARK to score the fourth, while two minutes before the end GADD notched the fifth and last goal.
A tribute to the Green's gallant fight against odds was paid after the game by many of Hitchin Town supporters.
