Match Report

Grays Athletic, newcomers to the Herts and Middlesex League, visited Claremont Road last Saturday, and created an excellent impression. They are a strong, workmanlike side, well balanced, purposeful and accurate. It was unfortunate that Golders Green had to face them with a weakened XI. True, Stroud was unexpectedly able to get Army leave to turn out, but Chappell had not recovered from his injury at Tooting, while Bucci was also unfit. E. Yates came in at centre forward, and E. Worthington [report gives R. Worthington in text and E. Worthington in line-up - brothers] at inside right.

Early on, further misfortune befell the Green, Yates receiving a leg injury ; after leaving the field for attention, he limped at outside right, a passenger for the rest of the game ; Stroud moved to centre forward.

After fairly even opening exchanges, Grays forced two corners, and from the second, Hockey put in a fine header, which Sale saved brilliantly. Grays continued to press, and after half an hour the Green's defence, in which Sealey was always prominent, was pierced, AYRES going through to score from close range. Soon after Sale was called upon by H. Phillips, and Sealey averted the danger for a further corner.

Just on half time, GOODYEAR put Grays further ahead. Early in the second half, the Green nearly reduced their arrears, when Stroud beat Bennett, but Moore was on the goal line to divert for a corner. Then Grays got away again, and, through bad defensive lapses by the Green, AYRES had only to put the ball into an open goal for Grays' third. This was after 12 minutes of the second half.

Munday gave Yates a chance with a well-taken free kick, but he skied the ball ; then, at the other end Sale saved Goodyear's header for a corner.

For a period, the Green had more of the play, the best effort coming from Worthington, who put a fine shot just over the crossbar. Following this, Bennett had some difficulty in gathering a direct free kick taken by Rogers, which was sailing into the top of the net, but on the whole the Green's attack never looked dangerous, and the forwards were not well served with the ball.
