Match Report

Leyton's Athenian League victory over Golders Green at Claremont Road last Saturday carried them back to the top of the League table.

In the earlier stages, Golders Green played delightful football. With Griffiths brilliant at inside left and with Stroud, Marrable and Topp playing well, Leyton were often in difficulties. After the interval, there was a complete transformation. Leyton were faster, and kicked hard and true ; their wing halves, in contrast to the Green, went up with the attack and back with the defence, and their backs kicked strongly and surely.

Golders Green made several experiments. C. Spillard made his debut in goal ; he made a number of good saves, but seemed nervous, and his kicking was erratic. Sibthorpe found himself, at centre half, against clever centre forwards in Limmer in the first half, and Page in the second. The clearances by the home backs were not good, while the home forwards were given no rope and were not quick enough.

The game opened sensationally ; a brilliant save by Spillard was followed by a quick move to the other end, where Marrable hit the crossbar with a rasping drive. The Green pressed for a while, but after 12 minutes Leyton broke away ; as Spillard came out, CULLUM put a high dropping ball over his head into the net.

Five minutes later the Green were on terms ; Topp passed to Marrable, sand the inside right gave the ball to AVIS, who beat Gibbs for the equaliser. Ten minutes later, the Green were awarded a free kick for a foul on AVIS ; Stroud sent the ball to the centre forward, who shot home.

Towards the interval, the Green began to fade away, and conceded two quick goals. The first, in the 42nd minute, saw LIMMER race on to a long ball from the Leyton defence, and run on to score a simple goal. Just before half-time, Boatwright eluded Fisher and centred across ; LIMMER came through, and as Spillard gathered, appeared to push the ball into the net with his hands ; but the referee allowed a goal.

After the change of ends, further quick disaster befell the Green. In the fifth minute, PAGE scored the fourth from close in, and two minutes later, Boatwright crossed a ball for PIPE to net the fifth ; in each case the Green's defence was at fault.
