Golders Green and Tufnell Park met at Claremont Road last Saturday, to contest the right to enter the final of the Middlesex County Charity Cup ; the game ended in a 1-1 draw and will be replayed on April 27.
The match, fought out before one of the largest crowds of the season, was full of excitement and incident. Mistakes were frequent, due mainly to the sudden change in conditions - a hard ground and very lively ball. Outstanding impressions were the artistry of Topp, the skilful defence of Lynch and the brilliance of Ivey, whose clearances, especially from many grand shots by Avis, were superb.
The game was marred by an accident to Woodcock, the Park's centre half, who, jumping to head a ball after about 20 minutes' play, sustained concussion and was carried off the field. He did not resume, and Tufnell Park are to be congratulated on the determined and dour way in which they held the fort with one man short.
Golders Green's attack was lively, but lacked crispness and purpose. Avis was outstanding and he and Griffiths gave the Park's defence a gruelling time. The Green had much more of the play territorially, but could not break down the Isthmian Club's rearguard.
The interval came with no score, but after 20 minutes of the second half, Avis put GRIFFITHS through well, and he scored a clever goal. After 37 minutes Tufnell Park equalised. The ball was brought forward, sent out to the left and centred beautifully for PRICE to run in and head home, giving Roberts no chance. At this stage it looked as if the Park might win, and a corner to them on the left, soon after, looked dangerous, but was cleared.
Towards the close, the Green made one or two efforts to secure the decider, but without result.
