Golders Green were without Topp, Stroud, Bossoms, King or Fisher (the first two on League duty, the others unfit), when they took the field against the London League side at Epsom on Saturday.
Williams played well at left back, J. Wharton was given a trail in goal and was promising, while Dovey had a good game at centre half. Stockwell, a pre=war Reserve home on leave, was at left half, but was handicapped by an injury which left him limping.
Griffiths had an excellent match at in side left in the first half and centre forward in the second ; he worked well with Avis, whose speed and shooting were a menace to the Epsom goal. But the Green's wing halves lacked construction and there was a tendency to hold the ball too long.
After 35 minutes, MINTER sent over a high ball from the right. Wharton jumped and gathered it, but lost his balance and fell, the ball slipping into the net to give Epsom the lead.
Five minutes after the second half opened, Williams cleared up the field to Griffiths, who put AVIS Through to equalise with a good shot. Then Epsom attacked, and hit the crossbar three times in succession.
After 35 minutes, Epsom took the lead with a goal from HOLLIDAY, and just before the final whistle, the same player netted a third.
