Golders Green ran out easy winners in their Athenian League game with Hitchin at Claremont Road, last Saturday.
The home side were without Cochrane, injured, but fortunately, E. Owen, a member of the 1939 County Cup winning side, now demobilised, was available for left-wing position. He added much to the Green's attack, and had Avis given him more of the ball, he would have proved a greater danger to the visiting defence. Apart from this, Avis played a great game, and his two goals were magnificent efforts. Martin, deputising for Stroud at outside right, did excellently ; he only needs a little more speed to become a first-rate winger.
For the first time for many weeks, the Green's wings were functioning as they should ; it was, however, the Green's defence, in which the half-back line was outstanding, which took the major share of the honours, and Lynch's duels with the elusive and speedy little Graham were a source of great entertainment to the large crowd.
After sustained pressure by the Green in the first few minutes, a long clearance down the field started a Hitchin attack. The ball came across and Moss decided against intercepting it in the air ; it dropped at the foot of NASH, who promptly shot home to give the visitors the lead after about six minutes. Then, after 20 minutes, MARRABLE, receiving from Griffiths, shot home from 25 yards to equalise with an excellent effort.
Following nice play between GRIFFITHS and Martin, the centre forward received a good return pass and scored a very cool goal to give the Green the lead after 40 minutes' play.
The Green got away straight from the restart after the interval, Griffiths and Martin again working well ; the ball went to AVIS, who crashed home a great drive from an acute angle to score the Green's third.
The Green's fourth and last goal came after 25 minutes. Marrable sent the ball to AVIS, who again netted with a grand shot.
In the closing stages it was all Golders Green ; Martin had bad luck with one shot which hit the upright, while Jones saved a number - one from Avis being a particularly good clearance. The Green, in fact, were peppering the Hitchin goal, the visitors rarely breaking away.
