Golders Green travelled to Bromley last Saturday for their 2nd round London Senior Cup tie and were defeated 4-1. The score in no way represented the run of the play, for, crossing over only one goal in arrears, Golders Green for full 30 minutes of the second half literally hemmed Bromley in and had the home defence in considerable difficulties : only lack of punch forward and some brilliant goalkeeping by Barron kept them out. The winners' last two goals were scored from breakaways in the last 12 minutes.
King was unfit. R. Martin, of the Reserves, came in at inside-right, and gave a promising display. The star of the forward line, however, was Avis : he and Topp were the outstanding players on the field.
Bromley opened the score after 7 minutes, when a free kick was sent to Coulson, who centred across for RUDDY to score, though it seemed that Roberts was at fault. After 17 minutes Bromley were two up : Reece got through and RUDDY headed home his centre.
The Green made several determined attacks ; once Stroud got through and put across a low ball. There was no one up to tap it home, and Barron cleared. Cochrane beat Mallett on the other wing, but instead of lifting the ball over, shot straight at Barron, who saved easily. Two corners to the Green followed, then Avis again put Cochrane away, but again he shot at Barron. Just before half-time Avis got through with a fine burst of speed, and was tripped in the area just as he was about to shoot. LYNCH took the penalty kick and scored, to make the interval tally Bromley 2, Golders Green 1.
In the second half Bromley were for the most part well held, though they looked dangerous in breakaways ; one such move saw Roberts make a brilliant save of a header by Ruddy.
After 35 minutes Roberts parried a shot, and the ball went to REECE, who touched it and it trickled into the net. Just before the end Bromley scored their fourth when Ruddy passed to SCOTT, unmarked, and he easily beat Roberts.
