Match Report

On a snow-covered pitch and in a blinding blizzard, Golders Green, playing four reserves, crashed heavily at Claremont Road last Saturday in their home Athenian League game with Sutton United. The Green took the field without Lovell and King (injured) and Bossoms and Cochrane (not available). While the deputies on the whole put up a fair show, there is no doubt that with a full side out, the Green would have made it a very different game.

Not that there were six goals between the sides ; far from it. Sutton had all the luck, but nevertheless they deserved their win. They played the right game for the conditions and had a fine goalkeeper, a pair of sound backs and a forceful forward line, well served by the halves.

Playing with the wind and snow at their backs in the first half, Golders Green made the mistake of holding the ball too close. They attacked for long periods, but never looked like penetrating the visiting defence. Carr made a fine save from Stroud following a free kick and later cleared another awkward shot for a corner. The first half looked like being goal-less, but just before the interval, Roberts came out to gather a cross pass from Novis ; he did well to fall on the ball, but unaccountably let it slip away from him for SCOTT into an empty net.

On changing ends, Sutton did what the Green should have done in the first half. They used hard kicking and quick passing : with the Green's defenders unable to turn on the slippery surface, the home side was soon in trouble, and after only ten minutes' play, Sutton had put on three goals to bring their lead to 4-0. VAUGHAN scored the first of these from a pass by Novis ; AUSTIN netted the second direct from a free kick near the half-way line, and NOVIS got the third from a pass by Crisp.

Griffiths was brought down in the penalty area, but Carr easily cleared Lynch's shot, and Sutton went down the field, NOVIS easily beating Roberts for the visitor's fifth goal. Then Vaughan was brought down in the area, but Sutton's kick met with the same fate as Golders Green's ; it went straight to Roberts, who cleared easily.

Just before the close a Sutton attack developed, and though there appeared to be sufficient defenders to get the ball away, they failed to do so. It went to CALLEGARI, who scored Sutton's sixth and last goal.
