Match Report

Golders Green were much superior to Leyton when they met for their Herts & Middlesex League game at Claremont Road last Saturday. In fact, but for the weak finishing of the Green's vanguard -- especially in the first half -- the score would have been much greater, as chance after chance went begging.

Golders green gave a display far and away above that of the previous week. The improvement was due in a large measure to the magnificent work of Topp, Bossoms and Fisher, against whose rocklike defence Leyton were reduced to comparative impotence. As the visitors fielded an exceptionally strong side, the Green's win was all the more creditable. For the home side, Barnard's leave again failing to materialise, R. Worthington deputised at centre forward.

Golders Green started in fine style and were soon pressing. Following a throw-in on the right, the ball went across to GOODCHILD, whose shot Gibbs half parried before it went into goal, to give the home side the lead after 10 minutes' play. Soon afterwards, following a heavy attack, Gibbs did well to deal with a header from Mitchell, while a little later Worthington, at centre forward, shot over the bar with Gibbs out of goal. The nearest Leyton came to scoring during this half was just before the interval, when R. Evans (an ex-Golders Green player) broke away on the left wing and hit the post.

Early in the second period, Butcher got right through for Leyton, but Simmonds made a great save by coming out to narrow the angle, and smothered the shot. After 10 minutes' play Golders Green increased their lead when R. WORTHINGTON converted a pass from the right, while five minutes later, Goodchild with a fine first time pass, gave the Green's centre forward another opening which he converted well, to put the home side three up.

Five minutes later, Leyton staged a breakaway from which BAINBRIDGE reduced their arrears.

Soon afterwards, R. Worthington got clean through but was unable to get his shot in, and Leyton took up the attack. Fisher did some great defensive work to stem the tide, but towards the close R. Evans, taking a corner kick, gave the Green's defence an awkward minute before Butcher shot over the bar. But for the most part, Golders Green were on the offensive and were good value for their win.
