Golders Green were unable to field the strong side originally selected for their Middlesex Senior Cup Semi-Final last Saturday. At the eleventh hour, Bossoms had to cry off, and Barnard's leave did not materialise. As, in addition, Topp was ineligible, the Green were represented by a side weaker than they have fielded for some weeks, against a virile and purposeful opposition.
The forwards were not well served by the halves, and, even when close in front of goal, were slow, while their passing and shooting were wild and inaccurate. Had the Green taken their scoring chances as well as their opponents did, they would have won.
Golders Green got an early shock when, within a couple of minutes of the start, DOWSE put the visitors ahead by converting a centre from Perkins -- an excellent winger. The Green then took up the running, but, though they kept Acton penned in for long periods, their finishing was poor and they could not get a goal.
After half an hour's play, however, Worthington got a centre across, Mitchell touched to GOODCHILD who equalised with an excellent first time shot. The Green should have gone ahead soon afterwards, but Bucci's shot went over the bar with Boddy lying on the ground. Then Acton went down the field and DOWSE got away to restore the visitors' lead. Just before half time, DOWSE again broke through to score the visitors' third.
Following the interval, Golders Green continued to press, but were neither fast nor clever enough to overcome the Acton defence. Several positional changes were made, and towards the close, Stroud at outside right gave Gallacher at centre forward a pass only a yard or so from the goal line : but he delayed his shot and Boddy was able to clear.
The Green's display was certainly below the standard that has been seen from them lately. Only Simmonds, Fisher, Bucci and Goodchild could be said to have displayed anything like their normal form.
