Golders Green gave a most disappointing display and were soundly beaten at Claremont Road last Saturday, when they succumbed to Wealdstone in the 1st Round of the Herts & Middlesex League Cup.
The home side was reinforced, forward, by Barker and Barnard, though Mitchell, injured, was an absentee, Pulling acting as deputy. There was, however, some palpable weakness in defence which the "Stones" lively forward line was not slow to exploit. Goodchild and Barnard, the Green's wingers, played extremely well, while Barker worked hard but should temper his enthusiasm with a little more judgement and restraint. Bossoms, Fisher and Topp again magnificently bore the brunt of defence.
HARDIE opened the "Stones" score after four minutes' play and a couple of minutes laterGolders Green were awarded a penalty. This was undoubtedly the turning point of the game : had the home side equalised they would have most probably got on top : as it was Munday, taking the kick, put the ball yards over the bar, and a couple of minutes afterwards, RUSSELL put Wealdstone two up : after a quarter of an hour's play, the same player made it 3-0.
Golders Green reduced the arrears when Barnard put across for the left for GOODCHILD to shoot : East got to the ball, but it had crossed the line, though Barker dashed in to make certain. Just before the interval HARDIE converted a pass from Walsh to make the half time score Golders Green 1, Wealdstone 4.
Early in the second period East did well to save a dangerous header from Barnard, but after 15 minutes, BARKER received from Barnard and shot home a fine goal to bring the score [to] 2-4.
Here, however, Golders Green's successes ended, though after RUSSELL had notched Wealdstone's 5th, the home side piled on the pressure.
Then, just before the close, Welsh broke away and passed in to RUSSELL almost on the goal line and the visitors' centre forward went on to score from a most difficult angle, making the final score Wealdstone 6, Golders Green 2.
