Match Report

At Southall on Saturday Golders Green gained their second away League win of the season, thus taking two points on the Western Road ground for the first time in the war series of games. this victory raises the Green several places in the Herts & Middlesex [League] table in which they now stand ninth.

Southall fielded a somewhat unfamiliar side, though identical with that which had drawn with Finchley the previous week. Golders Green were without Gallacher, unwell, and were fortunate in having Sealey home on leave to take the centre half berth. He played a sterling game and materially helped in the Green's win. The visitors gave a trial to L. Drage at centre forward. He showed himself a capable footballer, but obviously playing out of position.

The Green's defence was very sound, and it was to this that they mainly owed their victory : The forwards were disjointed and the attack lacked punch.

In the early stages, Golders Green established an ascendancy and soon held a two goal lead. After only two minutes' play Goodchild got a centre across : Robinson tried to rob Drage, and the ball went to BUCCI, who scored with a well placed shot, which so deceived E. Merry that he made no attempt to reach it. Six minutes later, Fisher passed forward to BUCCI, who ran through beautifully and shot home a great goal -- the best of the match. Merry twice saved from Goodchild before Southall broke away and Wallis shot over the bar.

About this time, Topp sustained a head injury which materially affected his play. After receiving attention several times, he moved to outside right in the second half, finishing the game on the wing.

After 38 minutes Southall reduced their arrears, WALLIS converting a pass by Morrad, and half time came with Golders Green leading 2-1.

Southall started the second period with a heavy attack: Simmonds made a fine save from Morrad, and soon afterwards Snazel shot wide when well placed. After 20 minutes' play Worthington got away down the wing and centred to Drage : from his pass GOODCHILD increased the Green's lead.

Southall hit back, and Simmonds made another brilliant save: b ut this proved of no avail, as the home team came back for WALLIS to reduce their arrears after 25 minutes' play.
