Golders green completed their first League "double" of the season at the expense of St. Albans City at Claremont Road last Saturday, but only by the narrow margin of 3-2. They had won the first game, at St. Albans, 3-0 on September 25.
The Green should have made the game safe in the early stages, when they were well on top, but weak finishing resulted in scoring chances being thrown away.
In the absence of Barker, Gallacher started at centre forward, and Bossoms at centre half; Welland played at left back.
the opening stages were in favour of Golders Green. After two corners had been cleared, Worthington centred: the ball was near goal but Ravenhill only half gathered: BUCCI seized the opportunity and put his side ahead after 10 minutes' play. Eight minutes later, Gallacher passed out to Worthington and from his centre MITCHELL scored the second goal.
St. Albans hit back : Simmonds came out to put Sayers off a shot and soon Welland intervened to prevent Sibley shooting. Good work by Bucci and Worthington gave Gallacher an opening, but he headed over, and soon St. Albans were lucky to prevent a goal, the ball appearing to have crossed the line before being scooped out: a free kick off their goal line eased the situation for them: they broke away and after half an hour's play SIBLEY reduced the arrears. Just before half time, which came with the Green leading 2-1, Ravenhill made a fine save from Gallacher.
The visitors began the second half as if they intended to run their opponents off their feet, and nearly succeeded. Golders Green were disorganised for a long period. After 15 minutes, while Bossoms and Gallacher were changing places, St. Albans again broke away and SIBLEY notched the equaliser.
Then, with five minutes to go, the Green woke up. Worthington rab=n down the wing and sent the ball across. Ravenhill could only deflect to Goodchild who promptly lobbed in for BOSSOMS to shoot. The ball touched a defender and entered the net to restore the Green's lead. Just before the end Mitchell put Worthington through and his shot hit the far upright, bouncing out for Ravenhill to gather.
