Match Report

Golders Green were overwhelmed by Enfield on the latter's ground on Saturday, and only clever goalkeeping by Barlow saved them from an even heavier defeat than 5-1. The stars of the game, in fact, were Barlow and J.H. Colley, the Enfield right-winger, who was moved to centre-forward through the absence of Constable. He scored three of Enfield's goals, and it was his hat-trick, plus perfect ball distribution, that swept the home team to victory.

Golders Green were in difficulty on the slippery ground, but this was not the real reason for their dismal failure. There were faults almost throughout the team. The halves and forwards showed no signs of understanding, there was no fire in the front line, and the backs were generally lying too far up the field to be of any value against the fast and well-served Enfield wingers.

Enfield won the toss and played with the wind. They opened more strongly than the visitors and tried to break through on the right, but Bucci turned them back. From a throw-in, Preston sent A.S. Morgan away and his centre dropped in front of the visitors' goal, but Graves was there and headed clear. Offside brought relief, but after a weak raid by the Green's left wing, A.S. Morgan was in action again, He centred for Colley, but the centre-forward was too far back and the ball passed across the goalmouth. Shackleton met it, but shot behind the posts. From the goal-kick, Bucci gor the ball up to Brown and he winged it to G. Morgan, who sent in a good long shot, but not the sort to beat Bennett.

At the other end Colley was working hard for a goal, and once he looked like getting away with it, but he tapped the ball too far forward and W. Boston held him off while Barlow cleared. Snazel had bad luck with a header from one of A.S. Morgan's centres, but in the next few minutes Enfield must have scored if their shooting had been steadier.

F. Boston brought hope to Golders Green with a clever bit of work of his own, but he finished weakly. Davis was not fast enough, and Graves was inclined to be over-clever at times.

Breagan started a movement which might have brought a goal, but when he passed the ball across to Davis, who slipped it out to Boston, Bennett stopped a great shot from the winger, turning it round for a corner.

The game was 22 minutes old when COLLEY opened the score for Enfield. Taking a pass from Snazel, he shot low down and the ball passed between W. Boston's legs, to enter the net with Barlow unsighted.

Two minutes later COLLEY raced between Graves and Boston to score the second, and before half-time he completed his hat-trick. Barlow had saved well from Shackleton when Golders Green were caught with no half-back line at all, and A.S. Morgan took up a long pass from Preston. He streaked away, was tackled by Boston and centred for COLLEY to score with ease.

Enfield were altogether faster than Golders Green and always knew where to find their men, an art which Golders Green had lost.

Before the interval F. Boston spoilt a good chance by a wild shot over the top, and G. Morgan shot yards wide.

After the change of ends Davis dropped back to centre-half and Graves moved to inside-left. There was more spirit in the attack, but it never looked like bringing results, and there was no surprise when, seven minutes from the restart, A.S. MORGAN gave Enfield their fourth, from a breakaway. Barlow went down flat and reached the ball, but pushed it onto the post and it bounced into the net.

Golders Green were raiding on both wings from time to time, but there were few movements which brought any real hope, and soon Barlow was standing up to a regular bombardment. He picked up a grand shot from Colley and another from the right wing, turned one round for a corner and held a long shot from the centre, just below the level of the bar. Another he scrambled away on his knees, and then Shackleton drove the ball behind the posts.

When Golders Green attacked again a shot from Boston gave Bennett some trouble, but he quickly recovered and cleared.

Golders Green survived two corners, and Barlow brought off a great save from a penalty taken by Colley.

Then F. BOSTON produced the one bright streak in the game for Golders Green, accepting a pass from Graves to lob the ball into the net, Bennett obviously misjudging the distance. But there was no hope of stopping the Enfield onslaughts, and with ten minutes to go SHACKLETON completed the scoring.

Close on time Golders Green rallied and fought hard to reduce the lead, but the nearest approach to success was when Brown, served by Boston, reached Bennett and forced a corner.
