Match Report

The attendance of the Mayor of Hendon (Councillor H.G. Potter) on the Claremont Road ground on Saturday was an honour for Golders Green ; possibly the Mayoral visit also brought them luck, but it must be said that Golders Green's victory over Redhill was a well-deserved one, for there was at last a fair degree of cohesion amongst the team and method in the play.

The Mayor of Hendon made an official visit to the club, and also in the stand were Councillors L. Hirshfield and C.F. Windust. Prior to the kick-off the Mayor broadcast his thanks to the president (Mr. A. Gordon Raymond), the chairman (Mr. Mungo Chapman) and the committee for the opportunity afforded him to speak in support of his Christmas Appeal for the relief of distressed families in Hendon. He explained the purpose of the fund, and when a collection was taken during the interval this realised £5 5s. for the fund. After his brief address, the Mayor kicked off.

The changes in the Golders Green team included A. Lovell (from Southall) at right-half, Ellison (late of Barnet) at inside-right, and E.M. Owen (Welsh junior representative and Bangor [Birmingham Combination] player) at inside-left. Breagan moved to outside-right, and Brown was again placed at centre-forward.

The three newcomers gave a good account of themselves, and the front line was the best it has been for many weeks.

But the surprise was George Bucci, about whose position there has been speculation for some considerable time. Veteran he may be, but his performance on Saturday earned him admiration as one of the best men on the field, and it was regarded as a tragedy when he had to be carried off through injury. Fortunately he was able to return after the interval.

Redhill were playing two right backs - Mallett and Hollis, the latter a reserve who is a thoroughly good man and has played with the Casuals. There were reserves at left-half (Hewitt) and at inside-right (Langley, who will probably keep his place in the first team now), while at centre-forward Faggetter reappeared after an absence through injury.

Golders Green gave early promise with a nice bout of passing on the right wing, but F. Boston lost the ball when Brown winged it. Golders Green attacked again on the left, and Boston came in with the ball, forcing a corner, as a result of which Brown might have scored if he got his head to the ball, instead of which he trapped it and took it away from goal. He failed to find an opening, but another corner followed.

In the opening stages the Golders Green forwards were inclined to hang back, while the backs played too far up the field for safety. Francis, on the Redhill left wing, was fast once he warmed up, and a sudden long pass to him would have brought a goal, for W. Boston often left him entirely unmarked.

F. Boston and Owen worked well together, and from one of Boston's centres Owen looked like a scorer, when he was fouled. Following the free-kick, Bucci shot through the defence and netted in grand style, but a forward was offside and the goal was disallowed.

Redhill were raiding from time to time, but Golders Green did more of the real attacking and the inside men were given good opportunities by Boston and Breagan. Hollis had to concede a corner from Boston, and after an unsuccessful breakaway by Francis at the other end, Golders Green were all round the Redhill goal, but the pressure ended with Bucci shooting over the top. Faggetter led an attack by the visitors, but Graves broke it up and Golders Green came back, Boston swinging a pass across to Breagan, who headed the ball to the centre of the posts, but Carr cleared, Owen being a fraction late in trying to finish it off. Next Carr partially cleared from Boston and Brown followed up, but Mallett cleared his shot.

F. BOSTON was giving a better display than in recent games, and he fully deserved the opening goal, which came after 25 minutes' play. He ran close in to take a short pass from Brown and shot well past the goalkeeper.

Brown had hard luck not to score when he hooked the ball round across the goalmouth, but two minutes later Breagan increased the lead, finishing off from Ellison's centre with a dashing effort.

Redhill attacked more strongly in reply, and Barlow held from Langley. Graves cleared two shots from the centre, and Caswell broke up a likely movement on the right.

When Golders Green advanced again, neat work by Boston and Owen brought their fifth corner, but this was cleared. Then Golders Green suffered bad fortune by an injury to Bucci, who had to be carried off the field.

Half-time came with Redhill making great efforts to reduce the 2-0 lead, but Golders Green opened strongly in the second half, and soon gained their third goal through Graves' penalty kick, for a foul on Ellison. Carr stopped the first shot, but Graves, showing grand anticipation, headed well in from the rebound. Movement before the shot had been taken caused the referee to order a second penalty kick, and this time GRAVES made no mistake with his shot.

After Breagan had failed to beat Carr, Redhill reached the home goal area and Barlow punched out from Fogg. Further shots from Langley, Faggetter and Francis failed, and a free-kick by Faggetter sailed over the bar.

Redhill had made some positional changes, Fogg moving to centre-forward, Langley to outside-right and Faggetter to inside-right. The effect was to increase the danger of the front line, and Barlow had more work to do in the closing stages, but there were few difficult shots to handle, and it was obvious that Redhill had no chance of ever levelling the scores.

Brown and Boston were prominent in further attacks by Golders Green, and Ellison was doing a lot of promising work. He served Brown well and reached Carr himself several times. Bucci came near to success with a header off Brown, Carr holding the ball on the goal-line. Owen turned in a fine centre, but Carr ran out to clear before Brown could reach the ball to finish off.

Close on time W. Boston was injured and had to leave the field for a short time, and it was during his absence that Redhill scored their only goal, FOGG converting a pass from Martin.

It was a game full of interest, and Golders Green were worthy winners.
