Match Report

Changes in the Golders Green team for Saturday's Athenian League match at home to Barking were very necessary on the showing of the last few weeks, but the experiments made by the Selection Committee proved unsuccessful, and Golders Green gave about their poorest display of the season. The halves, with Breagan and Brown brought from the forward line, failed badly, and of the backs, while Pidgeon's displacemenyt of Caswell was unfortunate, while W. Boston paid far too little attention to Barking's outside-left, Sargeant, who had an easy day in consequence.

Lewin and Willmott were the inside forwards, but they did not fulfil expectations. After the interval changes were made, but nothing could pull Goldersf Green together, and they were soundly beaten by 4-0.

Barking's team was changed through the absence of Clements (centre-forward) and Caesar (inside-left), both of whom were unfit. Butterworth moved up to inside-left,
Brocklehurst taking his place at left-half, while Bacon, a 16-year-old reserve, played at centre-forward. C. Short, at right-half, was playing his first game with the first team.

Golders Green showed some promise at the outset, and Willmott forced a corner off Clark. Then Brown, taking a pass from Lewin, reached the Barking goalkeeper, but the shot was intended as a centre to Coppola and carried no power. From the clearance Barking attacked, and Brown had to pass back to Barlow to clear a movement on the right. Sibley looked a scorer right from the start.

When Golders Green got going again Lewin found an opening through Morgan's work, but the shot failed. Then Coppola broke away, and when the Barking goalkeeper ran out to meet him he passed to F. Boston, who slipped behind Wilson to shoot, but Godwin was quick enough to put him off.

There was one neat piece of team work between Morgan and Lewin which nearly succeeded, but Lewin's shot was cleared, and soon afterwards Wilson held from F. Boston.

Brocklehurst secured possession and swung a long pass forward to SIBLEY, who out-distanced Pidgeon and opened the Barking score with a clean shot to the far corne5r of the net. This was 12 minutes from the kick-off, and Barking had already established their superiority - more through the failure of the home team than through their own brilliance, for although the Barking wingers were fast and clever, there was not a lot of real attacking by the forwards. The outside men, badly marked, were quick to seize their opportunities, and sudden breakaways gave them their big victory.

Golders Green were altogether too slow in going for the ball, and slackness in midfield brought many dangerous situations.

Stevenson started the movement that gave Barking their second goal. He took the ball forward and pasdsed to SIBLEY, who slipped in and shot from close range.

The score remained at 2-0 until the interval, but Golders Green had their chances, and Wilson made some striking saves from Boston and Morgan. The Green's nearest approach to success came with a breakaway on the right. Morgan took up a pass from Breagan and cut straight in for goal. Wilson ran out and Morgan shot past him, but the ball swerved just outside the post. It was hard luck for Morgan, who had made a great effort.

In the second half, Golders Green were repeatedly outpositioned, and Barking's passing and tactical play brought them advantages most of the time, but the forwards were still not doing all the damage they might have achieved.

Golders Green opened with a little more spirit, and Morgan deserved a goal after some good work with Breagan, who had been moved to inside-right. In this half Brown was transfered to right-half, Lewin went to left-half, and Willmott changed places with F. Boston ; but the changes did no good, and Barking were soon on top again.

Their third goal came from Sargeant, who nipped in from the wing and slipped by W. Boston. Barlow was unsighted, and SARGEANT scored an easy goal.

Barlow punched out from Sibley and held a header from Bacon. Sargeant got his head to a pass from Sibley, but struck the crossbar, and from the rebound Bacon miskicked.

Golders Green livened up for a brief spell, and Morgan and Boston made great efforts to reduce the lead. The Green were awarded a free-kick just outside the penalty area, but Brown's kick was cleared, and after Butterworth had failed with a snap shot, he was given a second chance through Golders Green's half-back weakness. This time BUTTERWORTH made no mistake, and Barking led by 4-0 to the end.

In the closing stages Graves and Brown were injured, the latter having to leave the field.
