Match Report

Golders Green were without F. Boston, and London Caledonians were said to be weakened by the absence of Shedden on the right wing, for the first round replay of the F.A. Amateur Cup at Golders Green on Saturday. But actually neither side suffered from changes, for Davis gave a good display at outside-left for Golders Green - notwithstanding the fact that he missed a couple of " sitters ", while Walker was an excellent deputy for Shedden.

The change meant, of course, that Tait had to be brought in for the visitors, to take the place of Galt, who moved to inside-right to allow Walker to take the outside berth. {These changes meant that the Caledonians fielded the same eleven as in the previous week.] But it would be unfair to Golders Green to suggest that the result would have been different if the visitors' front line had been unaltered, for Golders Green merited their victory of 2-0 by persistence, endurance and opportunism on a water-laden ground which took the best out of both teams.

Davis, playing on the left wing to give Fred Boston a rest, made a good start, then disappointed the home supporters by a couple of misses, but in the second half he was a real worker and played quite a good game. Thomas's work in the centre was again pleasing, and the whole front line functioned well, but Breagan was the most lively of the lot.

Caira won the toss, but there was little advantage to be gained from choice of ends, for the whole ground was in a shocking state. Caledonians, however, showed up well with their long sweeping passes - about the only game to play on such a ground, and it looked as though Golders Green would be hard-pressed to hold their charge intact. But the Scots soon proved that, though great schemers and used to finding their men, they were no marksmen under poor conditions, and before half-time was reached Golders Green had proved themselves the more dangerous side when near goal.

Davis threw himself into the attack from the first and came near to opening the Golders Green account when the Scots left back miskicked, but he could not bring it off. Soon afterwards Owen, receiving from Bucci, drew the defence and passed smartly out to Davis, whose centre landed on top of the net. It was nice work and a near thing for the Caledonians.

Graves broke up a quick raid by the visitors left wing, and Barlow cleared the ball to Bucci, who winged it to the left. Davis was fouled when going in with the ball, and Bucci took the free-kick, dropping the ball nicely in front of the posts, but Thomas, ready to put the finishing touch, was offside.

Following a corner, Thomas tried to shoot through, but Caira stopped the shot and Davis, following up, had his shot held by the goalkeeper at the foot of the post.

Then the Caledonians were led by McGregor into a more dangerous attack on the left, and Graves was forced to pass the ball back to Barlow. It stuck in the mud and Barlow had to race out for it, getting there at the same moment as Bateman, who shot past the goalkeeper, but W. Boston was in front of goal and dropped to his knees to stgop the shot. The ball bounced out to Barlow again, and he cleared it. Caledonians came on again, and McGregor broke away and centred. Tait's shot brought Barlow down on the goal-line, but he held on to the ball and struggled up to clear.

A free-kick and a corner came to the Scots, but they gained no profit.

At the other end Breagan made ground and passed across to Davis, who was presented with a glorious chance, but, using his right foot instead of the left, drove the ball well wide of the net. Soon afterwards he again missed, this time with a left foot shot, following a useful pass from Owen. For a time Golders Green wre all round the visitors' goal. Three headers failed, and then Bucci took a shot, but could not penetrate the crush.

Just on half-time Davis put in a beautiful centre, but Thomas could not reach the ball, and the interval came with no score.

In the second half Golders Green looked like standing the strain better, and they were soon encouraged by the result of a concerted movement started by Davis, culminating in a capital goal from BREAGAN, whose work throughout the match fully earned him the honour of this opening score.

The visitors survived a trio of free-kicks, and then Bateman and Tait were prominent in raids which Graves and W. Boston broke up before real danger developed. Once Galt reached the goal area, but Graves took the ball from him as he steadied for a shot. Galt had been a hard worker, and one of his earlier shots, off a pass from Walker, gave Barlow an anxious moment, but after pushing the ball up in the air, Barlow caught it and ran round Galt to clear.

Golders Green's second goal came from a movement started by Breagan, who swung the ball across to Owen, and a short pass to THOMAS put him right to finish it off.

Just after this McIlroy was injured and had to leave the field. The damage proved to be to his left arm, and when he returned he went to outside-left. Masters was the substitute goalkeeper and put up a good show during some hot attacks by Golders Green in the closing minutes. Davis struck the crossbar with a lovely shot, and from the rebound Breagan shot over the top.
