Match Report

Golders Green, visiting London Caledonians at Park Royal in the F.A. Amateur Cup on Saturday, had two-thirds of the game in the first half and a full share after the interval, but all their attacking brought no goals, and it was a dull game, enlivened only by a narrow escape for each side and a recurrance of the previous week's incident at Golders Green, when the referee, blowing for a goal and then reversing his decision, gave a throw-down almost on the goal-line.

Owen came back in the Golders Green side, playing at inside-left, but otherwise an unchanged team was fielded. Barlow gave a good display of goalkeeping when he was troubled, which was not very often, for the Caledonians were not the best of marksmen. Caswell played a good game at left-back, putting in some of the hard kicking that is needed by Golders Green ; and the halves functioned well. But the forwards were not opportunists enough. Thomas was slow in the early stages, and Boston missed some glorious chances. Ellison and Breagan were always hard workers, and goals should have come from this wing.

N.D. Shedden and D.C. Blair were absent from the Caledonians, and Walker was moved to outside-right, Galt taking the inside berth and Tait coming in at centre-forward, while Nicholson played at left-back.

Considering the morning fog, the light was surprisingly good in the first half, but it failed rapidly after the change of ends and the match ended almost in darkness.

London Caledonians made a lively start, Galt pushing the ball out to Walker, who shot hard and true, but Barlow held the ball. Then John made a fine effort with a free-kick, but the ball sailed past the post on the wrong side.

Bucci sent the visitors' left wing into action, but Boston was robbed by Caira, and though Boston stuck to him and forced a corner, the kick was cleared by McIlroy. Another corner arose out of a perfect pass from Thomas to Breagan, and soon afterwards Golders Green were awarded a free-kick, taken by W. Boston, who sent the ball just below the bar level. McIlroy touched the ball, but it scraped through his hands and fell dead, almost on the goal-line. Thomas was too far back to finish it off and Caira cleared the ball.

Galt and Walker were promising well for the Caledonians, but Tait took a little time warming up. Golders Green were lively enough, but were not quick to adapt themselves to the open, heavy-kicking game of the home side, who looked like taking the lead when Walker broke away and swung in a well-judged centre to Tait, who passed it on to McGregor. The winger had an open passage to the goal, but hesitated and was lost, W. Boston putting him off.

Golders Green now did more of the attacking, and Ellison reached McIlroy with a nice shot, but once or twice he did too much individual work when winging the ball might have delivered the goods.

Bucci got in a great shot, making McIlroy leap across the goalmouth to reach the ball, and Ellison served F. Boston with a neat pass when Boston was well placed, but he used his right foot and missed the net.

Thomas was finding things difficult against a very good centre-half, but he was a good trier and showed brains in his distribution of the ball when he was held up by the defence. The Caledonians were very fast when they got going, and quick passing across the front line caused the Green's defence a lot of trouble, but faulty shooting spoilt their efforts, whilr Graves did wonders in breaking up many movements. McGregor made one of the best scoring efforts when he took a snap-shot from Tait's pass, missing by inches only.

At the other end Boston made a good shot on the run while chased by Masters and Caira. Near half-time Owen was injured, but he kept on, though he had developed a limp.

Caledonians gained the advantage of a corner, and the ball was well placed. Barlow reached it, but it fell from his hands and the referee blew up for a goal. A protest was made, and the referee consulted a linesman, subsequently ordering a throw-down in front of the goal. This led to another corner, but the ball was cleared.

Caledonians tried to force the pace after the change-over, but Golders Green held them well and were soon attacking again. Breagan made the home goalkeeper curl up with a lovely shot after a pass from Thomas. Soon afterwards Thomas netted, but the whistle had gone for offside. Golders Green were pressing strongly by now, and it only wanted a goal to put them in winning form, but all their work came to nothing. Thomas was not looking out for offside enough, and several times this put a stop to good work by Breagan and Ellison. Then Owen broke through, but shot over the top, and the goal-kick put Caledonians on the offensive again. Golders Green survived two purposeful attacks led by Walker, always fast and tricky, but after a corner had failed the Green pressed again and Thomas engineered a perfect opening for F. Boston. It looked as though a touch would put the ball between the posts, but Boston drove it clean across the goalmouth.

Then came Golders Green's narrowest escape, when Galt sent in a stinging shot high up, Barlow doing extremely well to push the ball up over the bar. Two corners followed this, and a free-kick against Golders Green for handball led to another corner, but they held out and retaliated with a trio of corners, which proved of no value. Thomas took up a centre from Boston and shot well, but was offside again. Then Breagan, gaining possession in the centre, forced his way through but went down in a mix-up with the goalkeeper, who was injured.

In the closing stages Golders Green were trying hard for the vital goal, but they did everything but score, while the Caledonians made some dangerous breakaways and Galt placed a long shot a trifle too high. Two corners at the Golders Green end were cleared, and the visitors attacked again before the final whistle sounded.
