A keen fight was expected on the Claremont Road ground on Saturday, for Golders Green and Bromley are both in urgent need of points ; and the expectations were amply fullfilled. In fact the keenness brought about considerable use of the whistle and stoppages for injuries.
Fred Boston returned to duty on the home left wing, but Graves was not fit, and his deputy at centre-half was R. Button, of the reserves, who played a good steady game and did much to offset the faults of Caswell, who had rather an off-day. Lovell and Bucci, the wing halves, did good work. Though he had taken a voluntary rest for a week, F. Boston was not at his best, and the whole front line was ragged in attack. Thomas was often left with no support at all.
The Bromley team included two former Golders Green players, V.J. Weeks at centre-half, and F. Centa at left-half. The team played with a better understanding than Golders Green and made good use of long passes on a heavy ground.
Bromley won the toss and set Golders Green to face the wind, a considerable handicap on the heavy ground, but Golders Green were soon attacking and worked through the middle to the goal area. The Bromley backs were slow to clear, and a little more speed by the home forwards would have brought a goal. Bartaby had time to clear, however, and though Breagan sent across a fine long centre soon afterwards, Boston headed the ball wide of the posts. Breagan led another advance and Clark miskicked, nearly presenting Golders Green with a goal, but Bartaby ran out to take the ball before Thomas could reach it. Bartaby cleared another from Breagan, and play swung to the other end, where a corner and a free-kick threatened Golders Green.
Bromley defence commenced to play the offside game with effect, but soon Breagan and Ellison, giving a pretty display together, worked close in, and Ellison was unlucky to have his shot held by the goalkeeper. The visitors swept up the field from the clearance and Holbrook winged the ball to Reece, who centred nicely for Brown to take a shot, but the ball passed two feet outside the posts. Reece gained possession again, but W. Boston headed him off, and when Bromley came again on the other wing, Bucci intercepted Martin's centre.
Barlow was reached following a free-kick for handball, but Golders Green carried the ball into the visitors' half again and F. Boston forced a corner. This almost brought a goal, but Thomas got stuck in the mud when trying to convert a pass from Breagan after Boston's place-kick.
Stroud and W. Boston were injured at this stage but played on after receiving attention.
Swinging the ball about well, Bromley made several likely raids, and Martin's speed on the right wing was too much for Caswell, but Bucci broke up some dangerous movements and Button played a cool and useful game.
A quick pass from the centre out to Reece beat the home defence, and the winger's shot brought Barlow to the ground, but he rolled over and scrambled up with the ball. There was a moment's doubt as to whether the ball had gone over the line, but the referee waved the game on.
At the other end there was a breathless moment when, following good work by Thomas and Owen, Boston got in a grand shot from an awkward angle, but Bartaby saved as he fell.
Golderrs Green were leaving Reece too much open ground, but offside stopped him several times.
Bromley's goal came from STROUD and was due to a fault by Caswell.
S oon afterwards Button was injured and had to leave the field, but he came on again before the interval. Golders Green tired themselves by a lot of close play and unnecessary work, while the visitors booted the ball freely and gained ground easily.
Golders Green opened the second half with a " big push, " and F. Boston quickly reached Bartaby with a rather high long shot, but the ball was cleared and Weeks passed it out to Martin, who got awat well, dodged round Caswell and sent in a hard shot. Barlow reached the ball, dropped it, and quickly recovered to clear.
Golders Green looked like equalising when Lovell pushed the ball through in the centre and Breagan slipped in from the wing after Clark had stopped Thomas, but Bartbay ran out and succeeded in putting Breagan off his hot. Martin figured in a strong attack in the home goal, but Caswell cleared with one of his best kicks of the game, and though Reece forced a corner shortly afterwards, it brought the visitors no advantage. Barlow made two grand saves from Reece before Golders Green got going again. Then Bucci worked well to push the game forward, and Ellison had bad liuck with a first-timer off one of Breagan's centres.
Golders Green were now fighting hard for the equaliser, and at times were all round the Bromley goal, but it was not until less than two minutes from time that the goal came through Ellison. Bucci passed forward to Breagan, who centred well for ELLISON to finish off, beating the goalkeeper completely.
