Match Report

Golders Green made no changes in their team althoughy the past week or two have shown several faults which need to be put right. The wing halves were lamentably weak, and Caswell's work at left back was not good. The failure of the defence was notable in the second half, when Barlow was very much overworked. The goalkeeper did his work remarkably well, under severe pressure at times, and saved Golders Green from a heavier defeat.

Even Graves' judgment was often at fault, but Golders Green would have been in a poor way without him. Brown spent the afternoon roaming far more widely than usual and made it clear that his position is right-half, not inside-left. Coppola, though he scored the visitors' only goal, was not strong enough, and Fred Boston had a very off day. In the first half he was rather starved, but when he got more work after the change-over, his performance was frankly disappointing. To some extent, of course, this was due to the frequent absence of Brown from his position, but Boston should have turned several chances to account.

Breagan and Morgan were the most dangerous of the forwards - if the description could be applied to any of the quintette on Saturday's showing - but Morgan was too slow off the mark, though he worked well once he got going.

Southall made a few changes, owing to the absence of Leahy at centre-forward and Lewis on the right wing. Davies came in at centre-forward. Vickers moved from inside-right to take the place of Lewis, and Keogh was included at inside-right, while Jones came in at left back in place of Wallace.

Southall made rapid tracks for goal from the kick-off and Christopher reached Barlow with a shot which gave the goalkeeper no trouble. His clearance put the visitors' left wing into action, and Brown and Boston promised well, but offside - of which there was too much in this game - spoilt the move. Then Brown pushed the ball forward to Coppola, who passed it on to Breagan, and he took the pass on the run, sending in a good shot, but Jones held it. Brown got in a long drive, but Jones could hold these all right.

At the other end Davies drove the ball wide after working through the defence and a free-kick taken by Jones (left back) for an infringement by Morgan, was carried away by the strong wind.

In the next attack Southall took the lead, VICKERS having a clear opening after beating Graves and Caswell.

Golders Green put on some pressure, and Breagan did good work, but the visitors could not penetrate. Bucci and F. Boston might have brought it off, but Bucci passed too far forward for the winger and the goalkeeper secured the ball.

Southall took command again, and Harman got in a beautiful shot to the foot of the post, but Barlow cleared the ball and Graves sent it out to Morgan. He made ground and centred, but Sculley cleared and Southall's right wing took the play to the visitors' end again, Christopher centring neatly for DAVIES to head in under the bar as Barlow leapt out in an attempt to punch clear. Davies was injured and was off the field for twenty minutes.

With only ten men, however, Southall were still superior. They made use of the advantage of the wind, and their passing was exceptionally clean, while preactically every man showed a good sense of anticipation - a quality lacking in the Golders Green team.

Harman was moved to centre-forward during the absence of Davies.

Golders Green looked like reducing the deficit when Brown robbed Keogh and pushed the ball forward to Coppola, who held back to tempt the goalkeeper out and then passed to Morgan, who shot wide but was offside in any case.

Morgan had bad luck in not finding the net when he took up another pass from Coppola after a movement started by Breagan. F. Boston also came near to success with a nice trap shot off a well-placed pass by Ward.

Golders Green's only goal was the end of a movement started by Brown. He winged the ball to Morgan, who got away better this time and passed to Breagan after claiming the attention of Sculley and [left back] Jones. He served COPPOLA well, and the centre-forward netted a good goal.

For the rest of the first half play was rather scrappy, enlivened only by an occasional clever save by Barlow or Jones.

After the change of ends it was expected that Golders Green would do better with the wind in their favour, but the whole team were a disappointment. Morgan, keen enough when he got going, was too slow off the mark, F. Boston had lost his shooting boots, and much ground was lost by failure to tackle promptly. Golders Green preferred to wait for the ball, and the absence of an effective understanding between the halves and the forwards was very marked. Nor were the backs inspiring any particular confidence. At times Barlow was the complete defence, and it says much for his work that the Southall score remained at two. He was badly overworked.

Golders Green had their chances but failed to take them. Morgan hung on too long and only forced a corner when he might have passed to an unmarked Boston, and shortly afterwards Boston shot from too far out when he could have reached close quarters with a fair chance of success.

Breagan, the most lively of the forwards, did net once with a header off Brown, but although it was a lovely piece of work, he was clearly offside. Breagan tried to convert a surprise pass from Bucci, but failed to get his foot square to a twisting ball, and from Petrie's clearance Coppola shot over the bar.

Southall were always dangerous, but their shooting now was not of the best. Once, the centre-forward broke clean away, but he tapped the ball rather far ahead and Barlow came out to take it from him. Barlow also fisted away a shot from Christopher. At the other end F. Boston sent in his best shot of the game, but Jones brought off a grand save, and he also held from Coppola. Twice Morgan and Breagan promised results, and Brown was unlucky to see a splendid shot rise over the bar. Golders Green's last chance was a corner, forced by Boston, but this brought no advantage, and the whistle went with the points in Southall's hands.
