Apart from the favour which, it must be recognised, was showered upon Barnet by Dame Fortune, the match on Saturday showed again that Golders Green must be strengthened in the centre-forward position. Coppola certainly tried, and he scored the only good goal of the game, but too many chances were missed in the first half.
Features of the game were the promise shown by Morgan, who was very active after a shaky start ; Breagan's fearless and surprise tackling ; and the perfect combination produced on the Barnet left wing by Fabian and Finch. Fabian has been added to the Barnet strength since Golders Green last met them, and he is a good partner for the fleet and stylish Finch.
It was a hard-fought game in which Golders Green deserved their one-goal lead at half-time, but Barnet were predominant in the second half, though it is unlikely that they would have been victorious but for the mix-up in the home defence which gave them the winning goal ten minutes from the end.
Barnet won the toss and chose to play with the sun behind them, but Golders Green appeared not to suffer through the disadvantage.
Making a strong start, Golders Green entered the Barnet territory on the left wing and Brown passed across to Morgan, who headed the ball to the centre. Coppola had to swing round to get the ball, but he kicked it over his head to F. Boston, who shot at once to the far corner of the posts, but Kimber reached the ball and cleared. Golders Green pressed again, trying to penetrate in the middle, but Coppola had to pass out to Morgan. The winger and Breagan were efficiently tackled, but Breagan passed the ball back to Ward, who returned it too far forward for Coppola.
At the other end Kelleher looked dangerous, but Graves cleared the lines and Bucci sent F. Boston away. He escaped McCarthy's and Gerrans' attention, but Wheeler stepped in and passed the ball back to Kimber, from whose clearance kick Barnet attacked on the right, forcing a corner. This brought no result, and when Barnet came on again Jordan finished a good run by shooting over the top.
A few moments later Macfarlane netted, but was offside.
Boston and Brown were well together in Golders Green's next attack, but Boston was brought down heavily after running the ball close in to the goal area.
Golders Green survived a couple of corners forced by Jordan and Kelleher, and after Fabian had shot wide of the posts, Graves got the ball out to Morgan, who centred too far back. Brown secured possession, however, and pushed the ball forward to Coppola, but the centre-forward was offside.
Though Golders Green were having more of the play, their work was not of a high standard, but Brown's " class " was very evident and Breagan was putting in some lightning and purposeful touches which would have brought results if Coppola had been stronger in the centre.
Soon, however, Coppola began to show more thrustfulness, and from a neat forward pass by Bucci, he headed smartly just below the level of the crossbar, but Kimber held the ball. Then Morgan, hesitating after accepting the ball from Breagan, lost the chance of a runaway, but he managed to get in a well-placed centre. Coppola shot and Hawkins cleared weakly, but held Coppola off while Kimber dealt with the ball.
Play swung to the Golders Green end and Barlow made a grand save from Finch. Kelleher came near to scoring before Caswell relieved the pressure, and then Brown worked an opening for Boston, but his shot went wrong. Morgan was now promising well, and he beat McCarthy and Gerrans, sending a long pass over to F. Boston when he came up against Hawkins, but Boston shot yards wide. Shortly afterwards Morgan took up a pass from Breagan and got away well, but held on to the ball a fraction too long and was put off by Hawkins.
Golders Green had two narrow escapes from Finch, but generally Barnet were overdoing the speed and sacrificing accuracy in finishing off.
Breagan started the movement that led to Golders Green opening the score. Hr drew the attention of McCarthy and passed the ball behind Richardson to Morgan, who made ground and centred close up for COPPOLA to shoot in past Kimber, seven minutes from the interval.
A few minutes later Morgan was unlucky to strike the crossbar, and in the last minute of this half Boston almost netted off Brown, Kimber saving at the expense of a corner.
After the change-over Barnet set the pace, and though Golders Green still had a fair share of the game the visitors played a more powerful game than in the first half. Finch was a wizard with the ball, and the defence had all they could do to hold him and Fabian., while Jordan caused Caswell a lot of anxiety, mainly through waekness on the part of Bucci. Finch came near to success with a shot across the goalmouth : Macfarlane lifted the ball over the bar and Barlow held from Kelleher. When Golders Green did get away they were stopped for hands, and Barnet attacked again, but Finch drove too high, and from the goal-kick F. Boston streaked
away. He was tackled at the last moment by Wheeler and centred to Coppola, who was badly placed for a shot. He winged the ball again, and this time Boston slipped in for a shot which nearly beat Kimber. The goalkeeper was also called upon by Breagan, and he stopped a grand first-time shot by Coppola, off Brown.
Jordan got past Graves and forced a corner, but this was fruitless, and Golders Green pressed again, the Barnet goal having a narrow escape when Brown passed out to an unobstructed Boston, who shot just scraped outside the upright.
Golders Green were playing well now and their chances looked good, but they did not keep it up, and after a spell of attacking by Barnet on both wings, a penalty was awarded against Brown. JORDAN took the kick and drove the ball well in to put Barnet on level terms.
Then commenced a stern struggle for the odd goal, but Barnet were showing themselves superior, and after the ball had twice been scrambled away from the penalty area, tragedy overtook Golders Green through a mix-up among the halves and backs. Caswell attempted to clear, but the ball bounced off Graves' back to present MACFARLANE with an easy opening, of which he made good use, giving Barnet the lead with ten minutes to go. Golders Green made heroic efforts in the closing minutes, and a fair result would have bdeen a draw.
