For their Athenian League match at Hayes on Monday night, Golders Green found themselves without a goalkeeper, Jacobs failing to arrive. Ron Graves took his place between the posts and, considering that he was entirely out of his element, he did very well. Golders Green were also handicapped by Lovell's lameness and the fact that Caswell was not fit. Yet they won a pretty fast match by the odd goal in three, and the victory was well earned.

Lovell moved to centre-half, Marrable replacing him on the right. Hayes were without Friday at centre-forward, Andrews taking his position.

Golders Green opened the scoring within five minutes, EVANS being the marksman. Then Hayes applied a long spell of pressure, and Graves saved from a free kick from just outside the penalty area. He also came out to take the ball from Jones, racing the winger for it and clearing. Shortly afterwards Jones went very near, striking the corner of the crossbar with Graves out of position. Graves was having a lot to do, and Lovell, in spite of his leg injury, was working like a Trojan to cover the deputy as far as possible. At length SCULLY equalised as the result of a corner.

Thomas made a good effort to restore the Green's lead when he got in a long, low shot which brought Greygoose to his knees.

Lovell's condition was weakening the visitors' defence in the second half, though he never gave up. Hayes were having more of the game, but their marksmanship was not brilliant though they were quicker on the ball than Golders Green and showed more scheming in their play.

A switch-over between Thomas and Breagan brought the winning goal. Thomas pushed the ball in from the wing; Greygoose slipped and let it by, and as it rolled along the goalmouth BREAGAN followed up to put the finishing stroke to it.

The game was played under trying weather conditions, but was a fast and sporting encounter.
