Match Report

At Bromley, on Saturday, Golders Green gave the impression that overwork had beaten them. They played like a team tired out and Bromley were always yards faster, wile the accuracy of the home side's swinging passes led the Green defence a merry dance. Golders Green's chances never looked good, and early in the second half it was clear that Bromley were going to have a walk-over. Too much mid-week play was the cause of the visitors' failure.

Thomas saved the Greens from a blank score sheet, but they would have suffered a heavier defeat than 4-1 but for the brilliant goal work of Barnes, who deputised efficiently for the injured Barlow. Bucci was absent through his recent head injury and Long took his place. Bromley made one last-minute change, Brind coming in at centre-forward in place of Duffield.

Bromley started with the advantage of a fairly strong wind, and swinging the ball about well were soon dangerous. First J. Green came within scoring distance, but shot wide. Then Reece got away and the Golders Green defence hesitated, apparently waiting for the offside whistle, which did not come. The winger took the ball in, but failed with his shot.

After 10 minutes' play BRIND put Bromley ahead, and they nearly had a second goal when the left wing broke away and Reece's shot struck the crossbar and went off Barnes for a corner.

Breagan led a Golders Green attack which ended with Thomas shooting wide of Ellison. Golders Green pressed for a time and Ellison got in a shot, but they were unsettled and too slow on the ball, while the Bromley wings were always dangerous even if the finishing off was not to good. Barnes had to concede a corner to Holbrook, and J. Green forced another off Graves. Then Barnes had to come out and scramble the ball away in a mix-up right in front of goal. Weeks pushed the ball forward again and Wade shot over the bar.

Graves was not playing a particularly sound game at this stage, and Barnes often had to come out to cover up his mistakes. Golders Green's nearest approach to a goal in the first half was when Thomas tried to get through on his own and drove the ball too high between the backs. It was a good effort, and if he had kept the ball low Bartaby might have been beaten. Actually, however, Bartaby had not one real shot to save in this half, and the interval came with Bromley leading by the one goal.

Golders Green tried to put a little more force into their game after the change-over, but it did not last for long and the old fault of fiddling by the defence instead of clearing let the Bromley left wing through for BRIND to score the second goal. Barnes held one shot, but the ball slipped from his hands and a quick follow-up brought success. Shortly afterwards Barnes saved well from Reece.

At the other end Lovell sent in a nice shot, but not hot enough to beat Bartaby. Breagan was working hard, but Clark was an unusually nippy left-back and upset most of the movements.

J. Green led the next effective Bromley attack. Barnes brought off a beautiful save from Stroud, but had to concede a corner at once, and from this CENTA headed in for the third goal. STROUD soon added the fourth. Towards the end Graves moved to centre-forward, but was not fast enough to make any real effect. Breagan forced a corner, and from Thomas's kick Ellison reached the goalie, but Bartaby cleared. W. Boston brought a fresh spot of life to the Green's game when he made a solo run three-quarters of the way up the field and pushed the ball through to Graves, but the latter had been caught offside. Graves took a lovely shot on the drop, off F. Boston, but the ball scraped over the bar. It was the sort of shot which, a trifle lower, would have beaten most goalies. Breagan had bad luck in sending the ball over from a corner taken by Thomas.

Bromley were still dangerous, the wingers getting in many good centres, but Barnes gave a fine display and held shots from all along the line.

Ten minutes from time Golders Green scored their only goal. Graves pushed the ball forward to Thomas, who found himself with a clear run to goal. Bartaby came out to meet him, but THOMAS shot well past the goalie into the net. The game ended with Bromley again commanding the play.
