Golders Green opened their Easter programme at Enfield on Good Friday, and came away with a useful Athenian League point. The game was a patchy one, periods of brilliant, exciting play being interspersed by rather dull, aimless kicking by both sides.
Neither club was at full strength. Golders Green were without Lovell and Bucci, for whom Robson and Caswell deputised, while Colley was an absentee from the Enfield side,
Enfield won the toss and, kicking with the wind, soon got away, but Constable shot wide. Then Thomas tried a long kick, which Bennett saved, and a free-kick when Graves was penalised looked dangerous for the visitors, but W. Boston forced Wade to shoot wide. Snazel got the ball to Wade, and Barlow saved for a corner, which was followed by a second. The ball was put across the goal and went wide.
Golders Green opened the scoring after 10 minutes. Berger got the ball through to Thomas, and from his pass Ellison was fouled as he was going through. Robson took the kick well, and Thomas put to OWEN, who beat Bennett with a fine shot.
Three minutes later Enfield were on terms. Snazel got the ball and put SHACKLETON through clear, the winger beating Barlow with a great effort. Graves' kicking left a lot to be desired at times, and on several occasions weak clearances allowed Enfield to set up some dangerous raids. Barlow made one brilliant clearance when the home attack was right through, dashing out to pick the ball from Henley's toe.
The interval came with the score 1-1, and on resumption, after a brief Enfield rally, Robson put F. Boston away. From the pass Thomas gave to Ellison, who shot over. Then Enfield broke away, Snazel sent the ball across to Shackleton, and from his pass WADE drove past Barlow to give the home side the lead.
The Green forced a corner, and from F. Boston's centre, Owen put across to Breagan, but his shot went wide. Two free-kicks to Enfield relieved the pressure before the visitors came back for another corner. Then a good movement led to a nice shot by Breagan, which Bennett saved with difficulty.
A weak clearance by Graves let Enfield in again, and Barlow saved an awkward grounder from Henley. From the clearance Robson started the movement which yielded the equaliser. He passed well to Breagan, and Thomas tapped the centre across to ELLISON, who netted. This was after 20 minutes.
Ten minutes later Enfield went ahead again. Graves took a goal-kick and the ball went to Hirst, who put Shackleton away. From his cross-pass SNAZEL got in a shot which Barlow would have reached had he not been impeded by his own defenders, and the ball slipped into the net.
Right from the restart the Green retaliated, and broke right through, OWEN finishing up a good movement by beating Bennett.
A good centre from F. Boston nearly yielded another goal, Bennett just reaching the ball before Thomas. Back came the Green, and Owen beat three men before putting Breagan in possession. The winger centred well, but Thomas put just outside. Then Enfield had a spell on the offensive, Snazel beat Berger, but W. Boston cleared, the ball, however, going to Constable. Berger was again beaten, but Barlow fell on the ball. A minute later another short kick by Graves went awry, and Snazel shot over. Enfield gained a corner on the left and following this the visitors launched a heavy attack. Breagan and Robson combined well, but Ellison handled. The ball came back and Breagan forced a corner, which was taken just as the whistle blew.
A draw was a fair result to the game, in which each attack was better than defence. Barlow was safe in goal, and W. Boston played his usual strong game. Berger showed some clever touches, but found the pace too hot for him, while his tackling was often too hesitant. Robson played an astonishingly sound and good game at right-half. Graves' experience stood him in good stead, but his kicking was not of good length, and he indulged in some dangerous short passing near his own goal. Caswell, in the unaccustomed position of left-half, played a very sound game and worked exceptionally hard. The forwards got good support from their half-back line, and on the whole did well. Breagan and Ellison were outstanding, while Thomas on several occasions had bad luck. Owen played a clever game, but would do better to release the ball earlier, while F. Boston's display was a great improvement on his recent matches, and if he would only hold the ball a little longer in mid-field, he would do much better still.
