Match Report

The return League match was played on the Claremont Road ground on Saturday, and resulted in a win for Golders Green by 3-1. Enfield started out well, swinging the ball about, and giving the home defence a lot to do, but they fell away badly, whereas Golders Green improved, and in the second half were definitely superior.

Fred Boston was played at left-back, and gave a very pleasing display, with speed, thought and heavy clearing. Lovell partnered Owen on the left wing during the first half, but he had not enough room here and after the change of ends he returned to his proper position of right-half, where his work was always sound. Button took the centre-half position, and Robson was at right-half until the change-over with Lovell.

Enfield made several changes from the team arranged, B. Williams taking the place of Delaney at left-back, while at centre-forward J. Colley was still absent, and his place was occupied by S. Rundle, who had sprung to notice by scoring five goals for the Reserves. Dalton played left-half and Henley at inside-left.

Prior to the match George Bucci made a National Service and A.R.P. appeal through the loudspeakers.

Enfield, playing a good open game, reached the home goal area almost from the kick-off, but did not penetrate. The right wing proved very pushful, but Fred Boston did good work in attending to sudden breakaways. He did not lie too far up the field and cleared with power.

Bucci sent Owen away and he swung in a useful centre, but Thomas could not connect and Robson passed the ball out to Breagan who ran in and tried a shot, but was baulked by Williams. For a time Golders Green had the Enfield defence extended, and a corner taken by Breagan nearly brought the opening goal. Bennett dropped the ball, but no one was ready to get on to it and he recovered in time to clear. Constable figured in some sharp raids by Enfield, and Shackleton also showed up well, one of his early shots reaching Barlow, but Button was playing brilliantly to prevent many dangerous movements developing, and Golders Green soon pressed again. Lovell tried a shot, and also Thomas, who sent the ball over the crossbar.

Golders Green were inclined to bunch together, and it was this fault which led to W. Boston turning the ball into his own goal to give Enfield the lead, but before half-time Thomas took a centre from Breagan and equalised with an apparently soft shot, but one which effectively deceived the goalkeeper.

During the first half the Enfield forwards had been better than their defence, and Golders Green had many chances, but were always a fraction too late.

After the change of ends, however, Golders Green began to show more power and a better balance was secured by the transfer of Lovell to the half-line, Robson taking his place forward. Bucci was working splendidly, and Ellison was putting in a lot of work. Play swung from end to end, and Rundle nearly scored with a quick return from Constable, but Golders Green should have had one when the ball hit the underside of the Enfield crossbar and bounced on the .line. It was hooked out by Ward before Thomas could finish off. A beautiful shot by Bucci scraped above the bar.

Owen put Golders Green ahead. Thomas shot first and the ball was met by Williams, but Thomas retrieved it at once and short-passed to OWEN, who drove it to the back of the net.

Robson was injured and had to leave the field for a time, but Golders Green were now dominant, and close on time the third goal came from ELLISON, after a series of corners forced by Breagan had given the Enfield defence a warm time.
