Many of the Wealdstone supporters sympathised with Golders Green in their black day on the Wealdstone ground on Saturday, but the home team had every reason to rejoice, for they had replied with a 4-2 victory to the recent draw of 3-3 at Claremont Road. Golders Green appealed strongly about two of the goals registered against them, and one certainly looked from the stand to be offside, but the referee's decision had to be obeyed, and the Greens showed discouragement in their play, though they did score twice.
Barlow was absent through a personal engagement, and his place in the Golders Green goal was taken by W.E. Barnes [NOT A.G. Barnes as shown in the published report], of the "A" team, who gave a fine display and could not be blamed for the four goals against him. Berger was played at left back for the Greens, but was not strong enough to hold the fast and tricky Brown, from whom most of the danger came. Greaves worried the Wealdstone centre-forward (Bunce) enough to make him switch over with Baldwin for a time, and Lovell played a grand game for the Greens, but Bucci was inclined to stand off after an unfortunate encounter with the referee early in the game. Friday was always sound at centre-half for Wealdstone, and Ellis troubled Breagan quite a lot. Towards the end Breagan was damaged and became a passenger.
Wealdstone set the pace from the kick-off and Graves, inside two minutes, conceded a corner to Brown, from which BUNCE headed in to open the score. Brown forced another corner off Berger, but this time R. Wilson shot over the top. Soon afterwards Wealdstone gained a free-kick, from which Scott drove the ball hard to Barnes' chest. The ball rebounded into play, leaving the goalkeeper dazed, and J. WILSON followed up to net Wealdstone's second.
At the other end Lovell placed a free kick well and Owen got his head to the ball, but was unlucky not to find the net. A second chance came from a beautiful centre from Breagan, but Thomas was not ready to take the ball and Loveday cleared. Breagan regained possession and made a fine effort, but shot too high. Breagan came in again for two more shots and caused Ellis and the goalkeeper some anxiety, but could not reach the net.
Berger was using his head well and placing the ball thoughtfully, but was often too far up the field so that Brown figured in many breakaways through good service by Friday, while R. Wilson, on the Wealdstone left wing, was not being well marked. Golders Green nearly paid for this when R. Wilson took a long pass from Baldwin and hit the outside of the net.
Lovell was doing his best to get the Golders Green forwards moving again, and at length he pushed the ball through to send Thomas away, but Friday held him off and he passed out to Owen, who only forced a corner. From the clearance Wealdstone's left wing attacked, but Graves and Boston stopped this and Bucci put Owen in possession again. Owen was working hard and well, but lacked weight against a big defence. He might have converted a short pass from Thomas, but held on too long when a first-timer would have been worth while. Evans was playing with style and showed speed and a useful kick, but could not bring anything off and Wealdstone returned to the attack.
Then it was that Bunce scored the third goal, which left Golders Green utterly disheartened. Bunce was so placed when he took up the ball that three Golders Green men appealed to the referee for offside. The backs appeared to be waiting for the whistle, and BUNCE was left with only the goalkeeper to beat. Golders Green persisted in their appeal, and it was here that the referee started his record of names.
Golders Green showed more strength for a time, and Ellison put a nice shot just past the post, Breagan also shooting wide. Thomas was trying hard, but could not get away from Friday. Once he passed out to Breagan who returned a quick centre and Evans headed a few inches wide. Good work by Lovell led to another effort by Owen, but only a corner resulted.
Before the interval Barnes was in action again and made fine saves from Baldwin,, Bunce and Brown.
After the change of ends Wealdstone nearly went further ahead from a corner, but Barnes cleared from Bunce and R. Wilson hit the crossbar. Golders Green were playing too close a game, and Berger was no match for Brown. He might have changed over with W. Boston as an experiment.
Golders Green rallied and gained a couple of corners, but without effect, but their first goal eventually came from THOMAS, who converted a centre from Owen with half an hour to go.
Golders Green would have done better if Brown could have been held, but he was doing very much as he liked and breakaways on that wing were constantly sending Golders Green back. Barnes brought off some lovely saves, but Wealdstone's fourth goal came from BUNCE, following a corner.
Almost at once Golders Green replied, Ellison, Thomas and Evans working well together for ELLISON to finish off the move.
The game was practically over when Thomas approached the referee to call attention to a linesman's flag and, after a few words, was sent off the field.
