Match Report

Some 4,000 supporters of Finchley, Golders Green and Wealdstone saw Golders Green win the Middlesex Senior Cup on the Finchley F.C. ground on Easter Monday, beating Wealdstone by four clear goals. There was no holding the Greens, who were at full strength. Twelve minutes from the kick-off they had secured the lead, four minutes later they scored again, the third came after half-an-hour's play,, and within two minutes the fourth was netted and victory was assured, for Golders Green had been playing up the slope and it was beyond any expectations that, with the positions reversed, Wealdstone would wipe out their heavy deficit.

It must be said for Wealdstone that C. Bunce was incapacitated. He should not have been played, and he had to move from the centre-forward position. But this does not explain the Green's victory, for their attack was altogether too good for the Wealdstone defence, while the Green's rearguard gave a much improved display.

Caswell returned to his position at left back and, though he miskicked once or twice, he generally gave a good performance, while Bucci or Graves covered any slip that did occur. There is no man in the team who can better Bucci at robbing an opponent of the ball, and he was in tip-top form on Monday. Graves was no always decisive enough with his clearances, but he played a brainy game, and Lovell, at right-half, was always sound and constructive.

Fred Boston, on the left wing again, was in every way efficient, and Lewis, the Wealdstone goalie, had to deal with some of the genuine Boston specials. But the star of the front line was Ellison, who, apart from scoring the second goal, was in all the successful movements, and actually prepared the ground for two of the other goals. He was seemingly tireless and, roving to a certain extent, gave the Wealdstone defence no end of trouble.

Wealdstone turned out a different left wing from that which Beat Golders Green on the Wealdstone ground, but C. Barker, the outside-left, was too strong for it to be said that the team suffered much from the change. Brown, on the right, was speedy and up to all manner of tricks, but was not given so much rope as at the previous meeting. Friday had a disheartening day, and Ellis was unable this time to stop Breagan so regularly. Lewis deserves a tribute for his work in goal under heavy pressure.

Prior to the game a National Service recruiting appeal was made by loudspeaker.

The ground was very dry, and with a light ball a very fast game developed. Wealdstone went out for an early advantage and Bunce took up a pass from Baldwin, but he shot too high and was also offside. Golders Green gained ground by a series of throw-ins, but after a centre from F. Boston had been intercepted by Loveday, Wealdstone broke away on the right and Barlow had to clear. Lovell stopped a free-kick by Ellis, and at the other end Ellison looked like going through when he was fouled. From the free-kick Thomas gained possession, but held on too long instead of winging it and lost the ball. Caswell took another free-kick for a foul on F. Boston and this led to a strong attack by the Golders Green left wing. Owen got in a neat centre, but Ellis beat Thomas to the ball and his clearance put the Wealdstone forwards on the move. Brown sprinted down the line and centred, Gaze calling upon Barlow, who dealt with the shot safely.

Golders Green went into attack again, and Ellison accepted a long pass from F. Boston, but tapped the ball too far ahead when running for goal, and Loveday kicked the ball up instead of clearing from Ellison, who recaptured it and passed to F. BOSTON, who crashed the ball into the top of the net.

Only 12 minutes had passed since the kick-off, and four minutes later ELLISON netted the second goal following a free-kick by Breagan.

The Wealdstone defence were badly shaken by the double reverse, and things began to come easier for Golders Green, who also profited by the referee's whistle, several free-kicks came their way in a few minutes. W. Boston took one and, from near the halfway line, dropped the ball into the goalmouth. Lewis held it, but following another free-kick by Bucci, beautifully placed, the ball was nearly bustled through.

Ellison, who had been causing much of the danger to Wealdstone, was brought down by Scott and had to receive attention. This gave the Green another of the series of free-kicks, but the ball was handled in front of goal by one of the attackers, and this brought temporary relief to the Wealdstone defence. Friday then put Brown on the move, but only a corner resulted, and with 15 minutes to go [in the half] Golders Green returned to the attack, led this time by Breagan and Ellison. The latter slipped round Friday and passed to BREAGAN, who found the net with a good shot taken on the run.

Two minutes later THOMAS turned the ball in off Breagan to give the Greens their fourth and last goal, the ball striking inside the post and bouncing well into the net.

At this point Owen was injured and had to leave the field for a short time. Ellison was also suffering from a leg injury.

Wealdstone showed more life after the interval, and nearly scored when a quick transfer of the ball from wing to wing gave Bunce an opening for a header. Barlow held the ball, but was in difficulty and had to force his way through a crowd of players to clear. Wealdstone forced a corner, well placed by Barker, and Graves was injured when Barlow leapt out to fist the ball away.

There were Injuries on both sides. Bunce was limping badly and Lovell and Ellison were showing signs of trouble, but the game kept up its speed and there was excitement enough if no further gaols came. Breagan reached Lewis with a fine long shot taken on the run, and Thomas went near with a first-timer off F. Boston.

The Wealdstone goal survived four corners in rapid succession, and at the other end Barlow brought off a wonderful save from a free-kick from the edge of the penalty area. Wealdstone forwards were still having their spells of danger, and Barker all but scored when he drove the ball close past the upright, but in the closing stages Golders Green were all over their opponents. Owen lost a grand chance of increasing the score when he hesitated after taking a centre from Boston right in front of goal. Then shots came from Boston, Ellison, Thomas and Bucci, and Golders Green's corners mounted up to nine. From one of these Owen was decidedly unlucky not to score with a surprise shot through. F. Boston was well placed to convert a pass from Bucci, but did not quite meet it. Lewis held a hot shot from Breagan, and Ellison turned the ball over his head to the corner of the posts, but Lewis punched it away. Bucci served F. Boston again and he sent one of his specials crashing just over the crossbar.

Wealdstone came into the picture again with a couple of breakaways on the right, but only unproductive corners resulted and, on the whole, it was taking Wealdstone all their time to keep the Greens out.

After the game the cup was presented to Graves (the Golders Green captain) by Mr. E.G. Hammond, chairman of the Finchley Football Club, who was introduced by Mr. G.R. Hawes, assistant secretary of the Middlesex Football Association, who expressed regret of the absence, through illness, of Mr. W.W. Heard. Mr. Hawes thanked the Finchley Club for the use of their ground, and thanked the supporters of the Finchley, Golders Green and Wealdstone Clubs for their large attendance.

In accepting the cup, Ron Graves expressed regret at the fact that Bunce was suffering from injury.
