Match Report

Over 2,500 supporters and visitors watched a marvellous exhibition of stamina by Golders Green on the Claremont Road ground on Saturday, when, with barely a moment's rest between the ninetieth minute and extra time, they beat Southwick by 2-1 in the Second Round of the F.A. Amateur Cup.

Southwick, opening with considerablr dash, secured an early lead, and there followed a long and trying period of uncertainty until Breagan's equaliser came well into the second half, Fred Boston netting the winner soon after the start of extra time.

The Selection Commmittee had displaced Ellison in favour of Coppola, at inside-right, with the idea of putting more punch into the Golders Green foward line, but these hopes were not fulfilled. Ellison would have given a better display under the conditions on Saturday. Nor was Thomas at his best, mainly because he was up against a shrewd powerful centre-half. Yet for a great part of the game Golders Green's attack was stronger than their defence, and the Southwick goalkeeper was given a lot of work to do. He did it well - as did Barlow at the other end - and both goalkeepers can take the credit for keeping down the opposing scores.

Breagan was the star of the home attack, but Lovell and Bucci compelled admiration for their good judgment and level-headed play at half-back. Graves was not so steady, and Caswell gave some moments of anxiety. There was again the need for heavy kicking by the rearguard.

Southwick were practically at full strength, but had lost Duke and had to fall back on Howells in goal, and he gave a grand display. Candy was a fast and dangerous winger, and much of the danger to Golders Green came from him.

Though the visitors looked dangerous from the kick-off, the first real opportunity came to Golders Green, through a foul on Breagan. Lovell took the free-kick and placed the ball neatly in front of goal, but it was scrambled away. Parlett sent the Southwick forwards away, but Graves broke up the attack, and Golders Green were soon pushing through in the centre. Thomas, tackled by Parlett, winged the ball, and F. Boston flashed it in to Bucci, who made ground before passing out again to Boston, who slammed in a beautiful left-footer, which Howells held.

Fast raids by Southwick were proving unnecessarily dangerous by the fact that the home backs were lying too far up the field, but Graves policed the goal area pretty thoroughly, though he did not always clear robustly enough. He miskicked badly once and let Candy through, but Barlow stopped the shot. At the other end Thomas reached Howells, but the shot carried no force.

Southwick forced three corners in rapid succession, and after a brief attack by the Golders Green right wing, the visitors returned to open the score through Moulsdale. Terry swung the ball across to Candy, who gave the inside man a perfect pass and MOULSDALE finished it off well.

Golders Green soon afterwards gained a free-kick close upon the penalty area, but the ball was cleared. Golders Green were now pressing hard for an equaliser, but Lovell failed with a low shot well taken, and Coppola hit the wrong side of the net. Bucci twice shot through the defence, but Howells saved, clearing the ball as he fell the second time.

Terry and Candy were prominent in further attacks by Southwick, but Golders Green were soon round the visitors' goal again and, after sterling work by Breagan, Thomas was unlucky to drive the ball over the bar, Howells running out to put him off his shot. Boston, receiving from Bucci, brought the ball in again, and Thomas headed from his pass, but Howells was ready for it.

The heavy going slowed the game up for a time, but Golders Green came to life again in the closing stages of this half and Breagan started a movement which ended with F. Boston shooting hard and true, Howells having to throw the ball out. Soon afterwards he had to punch clear from a fine shot by Thomas.

The Southwick goal had undoubtedly been lucky, but Golders Green also had a slice of luck when Adfield beat Graves - the home backs were too far up the field again - and got away with only the goalkeeper to beat. It wasa certain goal if he had shot in time, but he waited to meet Barlow, who dashed out and upset the shot.

Injuries took heavy toll of Golders Green in the second half. First Fred Boston was knocked out and had to be carried off the field. He soon returned, but Barlow, Lovell and Owen were injured in turn, and soon it seemed that Golders Green were a team of cripples. Yet they were gradually gaining force, and an equaliser soon looked like a certainty. Breagan was the inspiration of the front line, and only good fortune saved the Southwick goal in one of the attacks led by this cunning little right winger. Howells threw out from Thomas, fisted away one of Breagan's shots, ran out to kick clear from Owen, and then offside brough relief when Thomas looked a real scorer.

Quick exchanges followed, but Golders Green were getting on top of the game, and their attack was strengthened by Graves moving forward and placing Lovell at centre-half and Coppola at right-half after Coppola had failed to convert a perfect centre from F. Boston.

Once Thomas, playing the ball on the wing, centred to Owen, who flicked the ball neatly to Graves and he put in a fine shot which Howells just saved. Then Graves forced the goalkeeper to concede a corner, but this brought no gain.

No defence could survive so persistent an attack, and it was a well-deserved reward when BREAGAN netted to bring the score level, forcing the ball through in a scramble after Howells had saved from Owen.

The teams changed over almost at once for extra time, and the winning goal came quickly from F. Boston, who slipped in from the wing to meet a centre from Breagan, took a split-second shot and crashed the ball to the back of the net. It was an unstoppable drive, and the goalkeeper had no chance.

In the second half of extra time Thomas and Coppola were injured.
