Match Report

Some of the best football seen at Claremont Road for many weeks, was provided on Saturday, when Golders Green lost to a strong Army XI by the odd goal of five.

The Green were unfortunate in losing their goalkeeper, Hart, at a critical stage of the game. When clearing the ball, he had his mouth severely cut and was taken to hospital to have stitches inserted.

The match started evenly. After the kick-odd the Army began to press, but T. Kay broke up a nice movement when he cleared from Owen. Kay sent Stroud away down the right wing, but the winger lost the ball when Brown tackled him.

Quickly the play swung to the other end when Rowe, who usually plays for the Spurs, sent his forwards away with a pass down the wing to Stedman, but Stedman took the ball down too far and kicked it behind the goal.

After about 30 minutes of interesting football, the Army scored two quick goals.

The Army inside forwards swept down on Hart in the home goal, carrying the ball before them. When challenged by Boston, Barthelmy tapped sideways to PULLEN, who went through and netted with ease.

Two minutes laterthe visitors again cut through the Green defence. A series of short, accurate passes brought the Army well in shooting range and Hart left his goal to meet BARTHELMY, but the centre forward banged the ball past him to put the Army two up.

It was shortly after this that Hart was injured when he dived into a scramble around his goal.

The interval came with the Army still leading by two goals and during the second half, Ellison deputised in goal.

The Green made strenuous attempts to reduce the arrears but it was late in the game when Stroud scored for them.

Stroud fastened on to the ball near thr Army goal and remained undecided for a moment.

Addy advanced towards him and STROUD lobbed the ball over his head and into the goal.

However, the Army soon increased their lead when, after a spell of heavy attacking BARTHELMY banged the ball past Ellison.

Five minutes before the end Golders Green scored their second. GRIGGS went through alone and bundled the ball into the net,
