From the West Middlesex Gazette, 19 October 1940 :

After being three goals down at half-time Southall made a great rally at Golders Green in the Herts and Middlesex League on Saturday and were unlucky to lose by 3-2.

Southall were without Rowe, Wellstead and Marshall, unable to get away from business. Golders Green scored in the first few minutes and, when they added two more goals before half-time, it looked as if Southall were in for a heavy defeat.

But in the second half Southall were decidedly on top and only the brilliance of their goalkeeper saved Golders Green. He made some great saves, including a penalty. MORRAD and RUSSELL obtained Southall's goals.

Golders Green gained their first victory of the season, at Claremont Road, on Saturday, when, after a game of changing fortunes, they defeated Southall by 3 goals to 2.

The chief feature of the match was Southall's grand recovery in the second half. After being three goals down at half-time, they fought back magnificently and but for the fact that they missed a penalty, they would have at least saved a point.

The Green kicked off, and started the game in dashing style. After Cochrane had almost gone through, the ball went to Stroud, who was unfortunate in seeing his fine shot miss the post by inches.

The home side continued to be on the offensive and the Southall defence, which at the best of times was unsteady, found it difficult to keep their goal intact. The Green forwards were taking advantage of all their chances and they banged shots towards the goal from many yards range, instead of taking the ball through asa far as possible, as they usually do.

First Bucci and then Coleman almost scored with fine shots. After he had grazed the bar with a fast drive Coleman followed up by heading a corner from Stroud just over the crossbar.

Coleman was playing a remarkable game during the first half and was a continual source of danger to Southall.

After about 20 minutes play, Golders Green went ahead, as it seemed that they must do. Stroud took a corner and sent the ball over to Coleman. The outside-left hit an upright with his shot and when the ball rebounded, COCHRANE drove it into the net.

The ball was centred and Southall forced it up to the Green penalty area, but Boston thwarted a dangerous movement by conceding a corner, which was, however, fruitless.

Hart, the Green goalkeeper, kicked the ball out and sent it up the field again to Coleman. He fastened on to it near the centre and weaved his way through Southall's defence until he was in shooting range. From a difficult angle COLEMAN sent a fine shot past the goalkeeper, to score a fine individual goal, which perchance was the best of the match.

Southall tried hard but in vain to gain the initiative, and when their forwards did break through they were efficiently dealt with by the Green backs. About fifteen minutes before the interval, PULLING put Golders Green three goals ahead, when he converted a pass by Stroud into the goal.

Although the home side made several fine attempts to notch further goals, they were unsuccessful, and when half-time came they had a substantial lead of three goals.

Just as Golders Green had dominated the first half, so could Southall claim to have been superior in the second.

After 45 minutes of mediocre football, they began to show a speed and determination which had been entirely lacking in their play before the interval and the Green began to respect their appreciable lead.

Hart was called to action time and time again and although he saved many fine shots it was impossible for him to remain undefeated.

It was J. RUSSELL who opened Southall's account when he received a centre from Newman on the right wing. Russell made no mistake with his subsequent shot which flew past Hart from close range.

A few minutes later the visitors were only one goal behind. F. MORRAD finished a fine manoeuvre by his forwards when he flashed a pass past the goalkeeper.

Following this, the Green began to show a determined front and Coleman tried a long shot which ballooned over the bar.

The ball again found its way to Southall's forwards but this time Bucci broke their attack up before it could develop into danger.

Southall received their big chance to equalise about ten minutes from the finish, when a Green defender handled the ball in the penalty area.

The ball was put on the spot, and the penalty was taken by Brown, who had previously netted thirteen penalties out of fifteen, this season.

But this time he failed and kicked the ball straight to Hart who cleared the ball amid great applause.

On that penalty rested Southall's hopes of saving the game and for the remainder of the match they were held well in check by the home side.
