It was fortunate for Golders Green, in their Herts and Middlesex League game, at Claremont Road last Saturday, that Hart was abled to return to the side, and that he was in top form.
The Green's rearguard was woefully weak, and Hart was, for that reason, called upon to deal with many awkward situations. He performed miracles, and was aided by another brilliant centre-half display by Fisher, who was also well supported by his wing partners.
After half-an-hour of even exchanges, Barnet took the lead, when Bustard failed in a clearance, and Burlesdon put across for YOUNG to net. The home side equalised quickly. Greygoose saved from Birbeck for a corner, which led to the ball going to and fro in front of the Barnet goal. FONTANA fastened on to the ball and shot home.
There was no further scoring before half-time, but on resuming the visitors made a determined effort to regain the lead. Elmer missed a great opportunity when he shot over from a few yards out, and then Ryman put in a great shot just over the top.
The Barnet centre forward, however, soon atoned when he (RYMAN) received the ball close in, and gave Hart no chance. Barnet came again, and things looked black for Golders Green when RYMAN again went through and scored with a fine effort.
The home side then made changes. Munday went to left half, Birbeck to outside left and Bucci to inside left.
Golders Green began to play with dash and enthusiasm, and had this come early in the game instead of when they were facing a deficit of two goals, the Green musy have won comfortably. Fontana gained possession, put to Pulling, who passed to STROUD, and the winger, who had cut in, scored with a fine shot which beat Greygoose completely.
Soon after the kick-off following this goal, Munday gained possession, made ground well, and put forward to PULLING, who let drive. Greygoose touched but could not hold the ball, and it went off his fingers into the net.
For a period after this Golders Green retained the initiative, but could not score the winning goal. Towards the close, Barnet re-asserted themselves but found the Green's defence too strong, The game ending without further score.
On Saturday Golders Green entertain Napier Athletic in the second round of the Middlesex Senior Cup.
