Match Report

Napier Athletic came to Claremont Road for their Third Round Middlesex Senior Cup Ties last Saturday, flushed with a 2-1 victory gained at Southall. They played hard and typical cup-tie football, but the Green showed superior dash and skill, and though Napier kept a clean sheet in the first half, the home side ultimately ran out easy winners, Napier falling away badly when the Green scored their second goal, and never recovering.

The Green were strengthened by the return of Weeks and Lovell, Fisher thus being released to return to right back where he played an extremely sound and intelligent game. Stockwell, a product of the pre-war "A" side, moved to outside left, where he had a productive afternoon.

After Hart had saved from Aldridge for a corner, Golders Green, playing with the wind, kept up increasing pressure on the Napier goal, which had many narrow escapes. Stroud put a low centre across right in front of the posts, but Bailey cleared in time; Pulling put one just wide; several corners followed, and then from a pass by Bucci, Stroud ran in and shot. C. Thomas dropped the ball, but scooped it out apparently just in time. Even Fisher came up and forced a corner, which was cleared, before Napier made a dangerous rally. Peters broke clean away, but a fast run by Weeks stopped him and enabled Hart to clear. Pulling missed a golden chance when he slipped with the goal at his mercy, while Stockwell put in a good shot which was just wide. The Green continued to press, with an occasional breakaway by Napier; but the first half ended without any score.

The second half opened in similar fashion, the Green doing most of the attacking;
Fontana missed his kick, close in, before a breakaway by Napier, Caused by Munday holding the ball too long, led to a dangerous situation. Peters centred, but Hart punched Bethell's shot for a corner.

After just over 20 minutes' play, the Green opened their account, Fontana put to Stroud, and C. Thomas made the fatal mistake of moving out towards th wing. Stroud put the ball across and STOCKWELL scored easily.

From the restart, the Green attacked again. Pulling put the ball through to STOCKWELL, who again netted.

At this stage the Napier team began to lose their grip, and some feeling began to creep into the play as a result of which, one of the visitors' players was ordered off the field.

A free kick for a foul on Stroud was taken by Breagan, BUCCI gained possession and scored the third.

Soon afterwards came the fourth, and perhaps the best goal of the match. Breagan put in Fontana, who gave STROUD a fine pass. The winger ran on and put in a great shot from an acute angle. The ball completely beat C. Thomas, and entered the left-hand side of the net.

It was all Golders Green now; Pulling had bad luck with a shot that C. Thomas only half gathered, but the goalie managed to clear without the ball crossing the line. Further shots from Pulling, Stockwell, Fontana and Stroud all came near, and Hart was only once in action, to save from Bacon after a right wing move by Napier.

Golders Green defence kept a clean sheet for the first time this season, and the victory gives them the right to enter the Semi-Final, in which they visit Finchley.
