Match Report

Golders Green, playing irresistible football, gained a clear-cut 8-2 victory over Tufnell Park last Saturday in the annual Mather Cup match in aid of the Manor House Hospital, in the presence of His Worship the Mayor of Hendon, Alderman J. J. Copestake, J.P., who kicked off and also presented the Cup to the winners at the conclusion of the game.

The Green were strengthened by the return of Sealey at centre half, while Cochrane, home on leave, came in at outside left. Tufnell Park fielded their normal defence, but were without both their wingers. Goodchild filled the place of Cox very well.

Golders Green's forwards received excellent service of the ball, made the most of their opportunities:the right wing triangle, Fisher, Webb and Stroud, was brilliant, while Mitchell plied all and sundry with perfectly placed passes.

The Green, who had the advantage of the wind in the first half, made a quiet start and gave no indication of the avalanche of goals that was to come. Then, following a corner on the left, the ball was returned to Cochrane and from his centre CHAPPELL headed into the net to open the score. Two minutes later, Stroud got through on the right and CHAPPELL converted his centre with a fine shot. After another 3 minutes, splendid left wing play between Mitchell and Cochrane enabled STROUD to head the third goal.

Moon saved from Mitchell and then Stroud, following a throw-in, worked towards goal and tapped the ball to MITCHELL, who shot the 4th goal. A couple of minutes afterwards, great work br Stroud and Webb enabled MITCHELL to score again, while three minutes after this Cochrane put in a hard drive which Moon stopped but could not hold. CHAPPELL was on the spot to score the 6th.

Six goals in a quarter of an hour had given a quite unexpected turn to the game, but Tufnell Park's defence now tightened up, and the Green's attack was held : the Park nearly scored when Goodchild got the ball across, but Alexander finally cleared for a corner.

in the second half, though Tufnell Park had the advantage of the wind, Golders Green continued to have an equal share of the play. After 21 minutes, the Park, who continued to fight gamely in spite of their arrears, were rewarded when Goodchild got through and pushed the ball in to H. Smith who scored from close in. The Green soon restored the balance when Mitchell put to WEBB who ran through and scored the 7th.

Tufnell Park took up the offensive, and for a period the Green's defence stood up to heavy pressure; then FENNELL, who had moved up to centre forward, scored their second with a fine drive.

After half an hour Cochrane put the ball across to Chappell, and from his pass STROUD scored Golders Green's 8th.

Just before the close, Sale made a fine save at full length from Goodchild's well placed shot.

Golders Green gave a really fine display, in which there was hardly any weakness, and Tufnell Park must be considered unfortunate in coming up against them in so inspired a frame of mind!
