MATCH REPORT :- Golders Green opened their fifth war season last Saturday with a friendly match at Sandy Lane, Mitcham, versus Tooting and Mitcham United, London Senior Cup Holders, and Champions of the South Eastern Combination. It was a splendid game between two well-matched sides. For a long period the visitors held a lead. Tooting scored their second equaliser while Chappell was off the field injured; he returned, but for the rest of the game played at outside left, and did not actively participate in the play.
After the interval, Golders Green had a chance of going ahead, a pass from Chappell enabling Goodchild to beat Smith in a race for the ball ; he was unable to steady himself, however, and with the goalie out, the ball went into the side netting. Tooting were soon on terms, WALKER equalising with a good shot.
After 25 minutes' play, Doyle put the ball across. There was a melee in front of goal, in which Chappell received a nasty kick ; but he got his shot in, and with Smith beaten and the ball sailing into the net, Heasman raised his hand and scooped it out. CHAPPELL, though injured, took the penalty, and scored with a strong low shot, to give the Green the lead. Then he left the field for treatment. Almost from the restart, Tooting broke away, and seven minutes from time gained a corner on the left. Hellard put over a fine centre kick, and WALKER headed the ball home, giving Tooting the lead for the first time, and scored.
