Match Report

Golders Green spoiled Leyton's unbeaten home record on Saturday when they beat them by two goals to one. This victory was no fluke, since Leyton, up to a fortnight ago, had not lowered their colours this season, at home or away.

The cause of Golders Green's past failures was made obvious to those who saw the game on the Boleyn Castle ground last week. Pulling and Evans were replaced by Haskow and Cochrane, and the open first-time methods of the two new inside forwards transformed the Green's front line from an inept group of individuals into a dangerous and forceful combination. The team played football good enough to beat most sides they will be called upon to face.

In the first half, with the wind behind them, Golders Green were right on top and the Leyton defence was often very hard pressed. But for some brilliant goalkeeping by Gibbs, they would have built up a commanding lead.

After 15 minutes' play, the visitors were awarded a free kick, and Watson, attempting to clear, deflected the ball past Gibbs into his own goal, giving the Green the lead. Soon afterwards, Gibbs saved well from Stroud following a long pass by Fisher.

Leyton equalised after half an hour's play, PHILLIPS eluding Sealey and scoring with a fine shot. Then Stroud passed to Yates, whose rising shot, which looked like a goal, was miraculously saved by Gibbs. About five minutes before the interval, however, a fine passing movement between Haskow and Stroud enabled the latter to put across a centre which YATES headed home to give the visitors the lead.

This proved to be the winning goal, as there was no scoring in the second half. Leyton, with the wind in their favour, tried all they knew to get on terms : they worked a succession of switches, but these were of no avail, and just before the close Munday and Cochrane enabled Stroud to get through but he shot just wide.
