When Golders Green Football Club players went to their dressing room at half-time in their Herts and Middlesex League game against Finchley at Claremont Road on Saturday, they found that their wallets had been rifled and their money stolen.
It would appear that the shock of the discovery adversely affected their morale, for although the first half of the game was equally contested, Bucci giving the Green the lead after 25 minutes' play, Finchley, in the second half, scored seven goals, three of them in the first 15 minutes.
Thus Finchley were victorious with a score of seven goals to Golders Green's one.
In the first half Yates gave Page a glorious chance, but the winger put wide. Then Roberts saved a stinger from Pulling. Finchley had several spells on attack, but weak shooting spoiled their chances and after 25 minutes' play, following a corner, BUCCI shot through a ruck of players to gibe the Green the lead.
There was no further scoring before the interval, but 10 minutes after the resumption GEORGE equalised and within five minutes Finchley were two up, F. BOSTON scoring both.
The Green made positional changes, Alexander going to right half, Bucci centre-half and Pulling inside-right. After half an hour F. BOSTON scored and five minutes later, with Bucci appealing for off-side, R. SAINSBURY was allowed to go through unchallenged and easily beat Lucas [not Lake, as shown in the printed report and the Green's line up]. GLEAVE scored the sixth and George wound up with the seventh gal just on time.
There were definite weaknesses in the Green's defence, but it must be admitted that they were overworked on account of the forwards' inability to hold the ball. The wingers both did good work but wasted it time after time, Page by trying almost impossible shots instead of centring, Stroud by hanging on too long, gaining a number of corners, which proved useless.
The half-back line, with the exception of Pulling, who played a great game, was poor. Fisher and Rodwell were badly overworked, and Lucas [ ot Lake - see comment above] dealt ably with many awkward situations.
