Although ultimately losing by 5-2, Golders Green, in the words of a Walthamstow official, "gave the Avenue their best and hardest game this season." The Green built up a two-goal lead early, and it took the Avenue some time to recover and to settle down to their normal strong game.
Five minutes from the start STROUD, cleverly beating Childs, raced through to goal and scored with a grand shot. Before the Avenue had rallied Stroud again rounded Childs, centring in for BUCCI to put the Green two up.
The Avenue put on heavy pressure but the Green's defence proved equal to the task until a faulty pass in their attack enabled a long clearance to be put up the field. It was gathered by BRYANT, unmarked, and he beat Stidder. Just before half-time, a mistake by the referee awarded the Avenue a free kick. Following the resultant mix-up in front of goal, LEWIS equalised for the home side.
After the interval, BRYANT, again unmarked, received the ball and went on to give the Avenue the lead. The visitors fought back, and Yates drew Pinner out of goal and shot, but Childs dashed in and cleared off the goal line.
During an Avenue attack, Stidder was injured and had to leave the field, Alexander going into goal. Though playing [with] 10 men, Yates shot, only for Pinner to save for a corner.
Stidder, though limping, returned to the field. Almost at once, in a race for the ball,BRYANT beat Alexander and scored the Avenue's fourth.
The Green kept on pegging away, and made many determined efforts, but just before the final whistle, BISHOP scored a fifth for the Avenue.
