Golders Green were never seriously extended in their friendly match at Claremont Road on Saturday, and always seemed to have something in hand. But for some inexplicable misses, coupled with fine goalkeeping by Smith and dour defence by Myles, Lovell and Morris, the score would have been much higher.

The Green played delightful football. The home defence was excellent, with Sealey again prominent : Mitchell and Goodchild made a clever and effective left-wing, while Chappell, who has scored nine goals in five appearances, was a resourceful centre forward.

Early on, after Smith saved a fine 20-yard drive from Chappell, the Green went ahead. Bucci went away down the right wing and centred across for CHAPPELL to head a fine goal. A few moments later, the Green had a chance to increase their lead, but, with Smith on the ground after dealing with a shot from Goodchild, Stroud put over the bar. Soon afterwards, the outside right had bad luck with a shot that hit the crossbar and went out of play.

Half-time came with the score 1-0, but six minutes after resuming, Goodchild was tripped in the penalty area and CHAPPELL scored with the resulting spot-kick. A corner followed, but from the clearance Lyes got clean away : Fisher, however, outpaced him and passed back for Sale to clear. Fifteen minutes later, Bucci put Stroud through : from his centre Mitchell hit the bar, but the ball rebounded to CHAPPELL, who headed the third goal, completing his hat-trick.

Sale made a fine save from Tarrant, but the Green took up the attack again : Stroud, unfairly brought down in the penalty area, took the kick himself, and shot straight at Smith, who cleared easily. From now till the end, the Green pressed strongly, and there were many exciting moments in front of the R.A.F. goal, but weak shooting and desperate defence combined to keep Golders Green at bay.
