Golders Green gained a splendid win at Lower Mead on Saturday, and by beating Wealdstone by three clear goals, earned the right to visit Finchley in the Semi-Final of the County Red Cross Cup.
D. Hawkins deputised at centre forward for Chappell who was not eligible; as Rogers was unable to turn out Bucci dropped back to right half, and R. Mitchell came in at inside left. Wealdstone were strengthened by some of their pre-war "stars" in Baldwin, Bidewell and Barker.
The game was fast and well contested throughout. The home side had several scoring chances, but their finishing was weak. They played hard, forceful football, but the Green's defence was sound ; Sale played a fine game in goal, while Fisher and Alexander were very steady. Defensive honours, however, must once again go to Sealey for his rock-like display in the centre: it was seldom that the "Stone's" attack could pass him. The Green's forward line was much more enterprising; Mitchell gave a thoughtful and constructive display, combining well with Goodchild who received and used well, a number of good passes: Stroud, who has returned to form after a bad patch, was outstanding in the attack: besides scoring twice, he kept the game open and swung the ball across in first-class style.
The Green took the lead after 10 minutes' play, when Pulling put a nice pass forward for STROUD to dash through and shoot home. Wealdstone, with the slope in their favour, hit back and exerted considerable pressure; Sealey stopped Hardie at the expense of a corner; Russell hit the cross-bar, and the Green had a very narrow squeak when Sale ran out and the ball crossed in front of goal: but it was cleared. At the other end, Doherty saved from Hawkins, and Pulling again passed to Stroud, but he was off-side. Two fine saves by Sale were followed by pressure from the Green. Goodchild beat Kay and centred, but the right back recovered and conceded a corner, Doherty gathering Goodchild's centre. Then Mitchell gave GOODCHILD a fine opening and the winger beat Doherty with a well placed shot to bring the score 2-0, the position at half-time.
After the interval, Wealdstone made several switches: Barker went to outside left, while later, Bidewell took over at centre forward. Sale was called upon to deal with shots from Russell, Hardie and Bidewell -- the last being a particularly fine save. Wealdstone actually netted, but Hardie had already taken the ball over the goal-line before centring, so that the goal was not allowed. Then after half an hour, Mitchell put STROUD through and the winger went on to score a great goal which put the issue beyond doubt. The closing stages saw the Green well on top and they ran out worthy winners.
