Match Report

For their Herts and Middlesex League match against Tufnell Park last Saturday, Golders Green re-introduced Munday at left-half, while Tufnell Park brought in H. Smith at inside-left, Fitzgerald deputising for Moon in goal.

With the wind in their favour, Tufnell Park exercised considerable pressure during the first half, but the Green's defence was steady, Sealey in particular playing a magnificent game; Fisher, who had his work cut out, dealt well with the elusive Cox, while Alexander's heading and kicking were a feature of the match.

After half an hour, BEUSCHIER opened the score for Tufnell Park with a good shot just inside the left post. Sale stopped another attack by coming out and conceding a corner, while Alexander intervened in the nick of time when Beuschier was almost through. The Park held this lead at half-time.

After the interval, Golders Green had much more of the play, but could not pierce the Park's defence in which Thompson was outstanding. After a quarter of an hour the Green tried a switch: Chappell to outside right, Stroud to inside right, and Pulling to centre forward.

Then Sale received a kick in the mouth as he was trying to clear a ball with Beuschier on him. He left the field, Alexander going into goal and Bucci taking over at left back. Then, during an inspired period of 20 minutes, the Green completely altered the complexion of the game. They equalised and took the lead while playing [with] only 10 men.

Goodchild put a pass across for CHAPPELL to run in and slam the ball into the net. A few minutes later, Goodchild again passed in, this time to Pulling : his shot was blocked, but the ball rebounded to CHAPPELL, who again crashed it home.

Sale returned and with Bucci back in the forward line, the Green's attack piled on the pressure. A good shot from Pulling skimmed the cross-bar before Chappell passed in to Pulling : he tapped the ball to STROUD, who netted to bring the score [to] 3-1.

Stroud put Pulling through well, but Fitzgerald dealt easily with his rather soft shot : shortly before the end, however, Chappell put a nice pass inwards and STROUD beat Fitzgerald with a fine first-time effort.
