Golders Green put up a fine fight at Walthamstow on Saturday. There was nothing in it between the two defences, but the Avenue's forwards were more purposeful and more dangerous than the Green's attack, and it was this factor that decided the issue.

In the first half, the visitors had much the better of the play. Roberts saved following a free kick by Topp, and then following a corner, Cox hit the post, but Roberts gathered just in time. Soon afterwards, Johnson, in passing back, nearly put through his own goal : with Roberts out, the ball went just wide of the far post. The Avenue's goalie had some difficulty in dealing with a shot by Bucci, and just before half time Simmonds, at the other end, made a great save from Nolan, Groves putting wide from the rebound.

The interval came with a blank score sheet and the Avenue started the second period in determined fashion. Green hit the cross bar with a great shot : The Avenue gained three corners, following which Groves missed an open goal from a great pass in by Beckett. Golders Green hit back, Roberts being called upon by Bucci and Goodchild, the best of the Green's attackers, forcing a corner. After 23 minutes play, an Avenue attack was rewarded. The ball was sent backwards and forwards across the Green's goal mouth and finally came to GROVES who shot hard and true into the net.

Golders Green tried hard for the equaliser, but their forwards were very ragged, and showed no cohesion. Finally, about five minutes from the end, the issue was put beyond doubt when GREEN scored a great goal which gave Simmonds no chance whatever.

The Green's attack was switched after the Avenue's first goal, Stroud moving to the centre, Cox to inside left and Worthington to outside right, but the change brough very little improvement.
