Golders Green Football Club, fielding a team which included the Green's old goalkeeper, home on leave from Germany, beat Finchley 2-1 in a really hard match on September 22.

There was a strong wind blowing up the slope, and this made accurate football difficult. The Green lost the toss and faced up the slope; it was a ding-dong battle from the start, with the Green playing the better football, but with Finchley often very dangerous with long kicks down the slope.

After 25 minutes, Golders Green took the lead with a beautiful goal. Stroud started the movement, passing to King, who put the ball out to Cochrane. The winger centred and, positioning himself perfectly, GLASER received the ball and headed home, giving Desborough no chance.

After 40 minutes, following the rebound of a shot which hit the post, CROME gained possession close in and flashed the ball home to equalise. The interval score was 1-1.

On resuming, Finchley pressed for a time and Topp dashed across and cleared for a corner when Finchley appeared right through. The ball went down the field for a Green attack, and after 7 minutes, Cochrane put the ball in to Griffiths, who cleverly manoeuvred an opening for GLASER to score the Green's second.

Finchley made desperate efforts to equalise; but the Green's defence prevailed, though once Baker got through, but shot into the side netting. The pressure was eased and Desborough was in action from King, but in the last minutes Finchley came again, and Hart gathered well to clear down the field; the final whistle went soon afterwards.

Among the spectators were two well known old Golders Green players, Stan Barlow and Bert Broadis, pre-war goalkeeper and centre-half, respectively.
