Match Report

Hayes came to Claremont Road last Saturday with an unbeaten record, and left well defeated by a vastly improved Golders Green XI.

Lynch and Williams on the left flank strengthened the defence. Lynch completely subdued the fast-moving Irish international, Leahy; his clearances were first-rate. The half-back line was sound, Floyd effectively blocking the middle, and Topp, relieved of much covering work, gave a brilliant display.

The forward line was lively and the left wing combination of Griffiths and Cochrane, delightful to watch; Griffiths was superb, and has undoubtedly come to stay as a great inside forward; Glaser's right foot is devastating. King did excellently, while Stroud gave a scintillating exhibition of speed, dribbling and ball control; when he ceases playing as an individual and takes more care with corner kicks, he will be one of the best wingers in amateur football.

Hayes have some very experienced players, but they were well held.

In seven minutes Stroud manoeuvred an opening and, from King's pass, GLASER scored.

After the interval, with the Green leading 1-0, the visitors attacked, but were repelled, and the Green had a free kick for a foul by Leahy on Cochrane. The ball went forward to Cochrane, who turned in a quick centre, which STROUD gathered and put into an open goal. Nine minutes later Glaser hit the post with a rasping drive and the ball came back to GRIFFITHS, who scored the Green's third. The Green pressed hard; Cochrane got away and centred; Scully tried to turn the ball for a corner, but shot into his own goal for the Green's fourth. Then a long clearance by Lynch reached GLASER, who snapped home the fifth. Five minutes from time DOWSE scored for Hayes. Soon after Roberts saved well from Gadsden. Hayes appealed for a penalty when Floyd stepped into the breach with Roberts out of goal, while at the other end Glaser netted, but the point was disallowed.
